Woosh! Summers over and I love my friends. This will be one of the last times I have to leave all the people I love to rush back to the Southeast. And I’m so ready to be back home with them all. 6 months away! Anyway, here’s a dump of the silly goofy times. 🫶

Our month in Rocklands has come to an end. Truly the trip of a lifetime. So many eye-opening experiences have renewed my love for this sport. Feeling immense gratitude for the amazing people I got to share this trip with.

Now time to sift through hours of footage to create a video that can hopefully come close to doing the trip justice.

SCF Spotlight: Tristan Chen @tchenrock 🪨⚡️

After receiving a Leukemia diagnosis, Tristan became a recipient of Small Choices’ support. In recent years, he’s been a beloved board member and champion of our mission to support others.

👀 Let’s take a look at A Day in Tristan’s Life, during his summer trip to Africa.

1: breakfast with friends at the local coffee shop “The Hen House”

2: Flowers at the hen house

3/4/6: Climbing!

5/7: The views and hikes out

8: Scoping some more climbs//rocks with friends

9/10: The main dish or cooking style in this part of South Africa is “Braai,” grilling meat over a bed of coals and doing so with a lot of people. Similar to a bbq, one of the locals hosted one here and we went and had a great time, all climbers there this time of year. 10 is desert “Malva Pudding” a bit similar to a brownie in consistency but softer and moister.

“The climbing here is best in the world, all of the climbs so far have been really excellent. Of course I’ve heard of most of them and had climbs I wanted to try coming in but even the ones that I hadn’t heard of or wasn’t so interested in would be classics or stellar in basically any other crag in the world. Top that off with excellent views, super cool flowers, and a great hang with both the friendly locals and everyone else that travelled from around the world to be here it is perhaps the best climbing area in the world.” 🌍

Cheers to you, Tristan! Keep showing our community how epic and authentic life can be on the other side of a cancer diagnosis. We celebrate your wellness, always! ♥️

Slide 10 onward is a little glimpse at the other badass stuff Tristan can do, including making pottery and kicking cancer to the curb.

It was satisfying to cap off the year by sending this mega classic Dance Graham high ball in the tanks. I took an unexpected fall high up on this boulder a few years ago and suffered a sprained ankle and knee that sidelined me for awhile after the fall. Ultimately I think I just got unlucky that day but it was nice to get some revenge and finally put it to rest! Thanks to everyone who I dragged up there the other day for pads and support!

When I started Small Choices, my intention was simple — to give to those on the front lines of a cancer battle.

What I didn’t expect was how much joy and healing would come from creating a space where others could give back too.
Watching people find purpose and connection through giving has become one of the greatest rewards.

Last year Tristan, a leukemia survivor and recipient of Small Choices programs, helped assemble and deliver gifts to those in the hospital where he was once a patient himself.

Nick, also a leukemia survivor, received his gift from Tristan while inpatient.
This year, however, Nick was part of the assembly crew, happy to pay it forward as he recovers his own health.

Here’s to the gift of giving this Christmas Eve.
Wishing you all much love and health. ❤️

📕 How Cancer Stole Christmas (until Kate didn’t let it) 📗

In our world, The Grinch is real. It just has another name– Cancer.

A cancer diagnosis overshadows the merriment and brightness of the holiday season. Jingle bells are replaced with beeping chemo pumps, fireside cheers’ are replaced with pill cups, and families who should be snuggled on the couch together are huddled around hospital beds.

Every year, our board members and volunteers gather in fierce determination to sweeten the season. 🕯️

Reminiscent of Whoville, Kate’s house is overtaken by warm blankets, fuzzy socks, homemade holiday cards, craft kits, snowflake window-clings, and hats to fill inpatient holiday gift bags. 🎁✨

A bag of holiday cheer makes a real difference for 150 patients each year. For Colorado Gives Day, we need your help to make this season brighter— please make a gift today at the link in bio! 🎄
