Landscape Architects and Urban Designers focused on the poetic expression of landscape and contemporary culture.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

TCL was founded some 35 years ago as Taylor Cullity Lethlean, with Kate Cullity a founding partner, bringing horticultural expertise and a background in artistic practice. The company has consistently followed an experimental and conceptual path, gaining a strong international reputation in the process. Probably its most celebrated project is the Australian Garden at Cranborne, Victoria: a bold re-imagining of what a botanic garden can be.

‘We want to ask ourselves, what are the ways we can create sustainable environments that are also culturally, socially, and aesthetically significant,’ Kate says. The answer to this question can be found in many of TCL’s projects, which range from deeply spiritual, ecologically and culturally specific projects such as the landscape around the Uluru Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, to the chic modernist aesthetic of the Twig House in Melbourne, where ‘light and shadow create an ever-changing phenomenological experience, where trellises, trees of tall bamboo, screens and water create a chiaroscuro’.

In 2013 Kate completed a PhD that reflected on 25 years of TCL’s practice, as well as her interest in beauty, aesthetics and care, and how these qualities can be aligned with the creation and appreciation of resilient landscapes. More recently, Kate has been compiling a book on TCL’s gardens and, as part of this endeavour, she has been pondering the multi-layered question: ‘What is a Garden?’

Gunyama Park, Zetland Sydney.

What an excellent showcase of the role in which recycled timber can play in not only ecological function, but cultural design and connection to country.

For this project, Recycled Timbers supplied 19 redundant Australian hardwood power poles, repurposed as supports for habitat and nesting boxes throughout the park.

@djinjama, a Sydney based cultural design and research practice, led the cultural design and interpretation of the project, integrating the concept of ‘Cultural Seasons’ throughout the park. Carefully considered, were the culturally significant plants, materials, textures, colours and graphics.

We thank the team at Djinjama for providing a meaningful example of how recycled timber can serve a purpose beyond its original use, contributing to habitat creation whilst also providing a canvas for cultural storytelling.

The nesting boxes are installed throughout the park on recycled timber posts, to encourage a healthy ecology, supporting habitat for a number of local species.

The poles were supplied at different lengths to ensure the nesting requirements for each species was met. Install heights range from 3-14m above the ground.

At the heart of the design, is the concept ‘Cultural Seasons’. The concept reflects the First Nations knowledge of the natural environment and its seasonal changes, dictated by changes in plants, animals and climate.

The cultural seasonal calendar is expressed throughout the interpretative elements which have been etched and carved into the recycled poles. The markings and patterns interpret the artworks, storytelling and shared wisdom of the Gadigal/Dharug, Budawang/Yuin and Gundungurra Elder, Uncle Greg Simms.

The interpretive elements on the posts visualise the fauna and flora of Gadigal Country.

Our redundant power poles are Australian hardwood, mixed species, Class 1 durability. The poles supplied for the project were handbrushed, a finish offered by Recycled Timbers to enhance the timber’s history, natural characteristics and individual patina.

The projects understanding of seasons has been adopted from Cooee Mittigar, a Dharug children’s book written by Jasmine Seymour and

ANNOUNCEMENT | Parrot Play* Playground, Melbourne

Award-winning landscape architecture firm, @tcl_studio and leading Australian visual artist, @emilyfloyd0 are appointed to realise the new Queens Park West Playground in Moonee Valley, Melbourne’s inner north-west neighbourhood. Set to open in late 2027, the collaboration brings together parrots, play and a love of nature in an imaginative new playground, designed for local families and as a new cultural destination for the city.

Following a public design competition in late 2025, TCL and Floyd’s winning concept, Parrot Play*, stood out for its creative response to the unique character of Queens Park, taking inspiration from the colourful parrots that call the park home and exploring themes of ecology, family and kinship through artful play.

“Parrots are an important indicator of biodiversity, connected to the plants, animals, microorganisms and ecosystems that make up the natural environment around them. This concept brings these connections to life through sculptural parrots, nested play experiences and a lush garden setting.” - Emily Floyd, Artist

Queens Park West Playground is a major infrastructure project by @mooneevalleycitycouncil and the most ambitious permanent public artwork realised by The Playground Project Melbourne, a blockbuster exhibition presented at @incinerator_gallery in 2025 with significant local and international partners.

The winning proposal was selected by an industry-led jury, comprising:

· Georgia Chisholm, Landscape Architecture Advisor, Office of the Victorian Government Architect @georgia.e.chisholm

· Jocelyn Chiew, Urban Design Consultant @jocelynchiew_

· Mel Dodd, Dean of Monash Art, Design and Architecture @meldiddx

· Jade Niklai, Former Head of Visual and Public Art, MVCC @atelier_jade_niklai

The competition was facilitated by @citylabau, a leading design consultancy.

What better way to get to know a material than to see where it starts?

For our recent VIP Lunch Experience, we invited architects, landscape architects and industry partners out of the office and into the quarry for a closer look at where some of the raw materials behind our products are sourced.

With a particular focus on our terrazzo range, it was a chance to see the materials up close, ask questions and learn a little more about what goes into our locally manufactured products.

Then, of course, there was lunch, a chance to catch up, continue the conversation and enjoy the afternoon together.
Thanks to everyone who joined us!

Vogue Grange has been awarded the landscaping package for the public realm, Tower 3 and Wurundjeri Way for @gurner_tm development Elysium Fields Docklands.

A significant part of our early involvement was working with @hamiltonandmarino and @tcl_studio to establish the appropriate tree species, sizing, specification and available stock for the project.

Our team went to market to source the best possible stock available, gathering requirements from the consultants and the City of Melbourne before presenting suitable options from both local and interstate growers.

From there, our team travelled to the Northern Rivers NSW with Tony from @arbornetqualityplants to inspect and hand select the Livistona australis (Cabbage Tree Palms) allocated across Towers 1–3.

Today marked a milestone, with the first stage of these palms installed in front of Tower 1.

Working alongside Hamilton Marino and Symal the installation presented some challenges. Each palm needed to be carefully lowered through an approximately 1m opening into the Stratavault soil cell system.

Through careful planning and our team’s experience onsite, we were able to progressively place and compact material around each root ball in layers, providing the stability required without the need to brace the palms back to external counterweights. This was particularly important given the ongoing civil works and the need to maintain clear working areas around the installation.

Over the next two months, our team will continue to monitor the palms as they settle, making minor adjustments, straightening and recompacting where required. The fronds will remain tied initially to protect the central growing spine while the transplanted palms recover and establish.

Well done to our project team and everyone involved in getting the first stage safely into the ground. Great to see them landed and ready to establish through spring.

so delighted to be a part of this discussion panel with sky from @arcadiaaquaticadl and kate from @tcl_studio for @naturefestivalsa //

expect personal reflections and heartfelt connections about how noticing nature is a daily compulsion of gathering and foraging.

think seed pods at the bottom of coat pockets and broken flower stems wedged between desktop stationery - but then what? why do ephemeral nature tables and jam jars of fading botanicals inspire and ground the design process.

plenty of time for audience questions too 🍁❤️ book tickets via link in bio #adelaideflorist
