New Resource! 📖 Educators and administrators: Read the guide and share it with your colleagues!

Our “Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices” helps teachers and administrators better understand the religious practices and needs of their Muslim students, build cultural competence, and create more inclusive and thoughtful classrooms.

The guide covers common Islamic practices and misconceptions, legal protections for students, and practical guidance on accommodations including halal food, prayer spaces, and Eid holidays. It also includes guidance on navigating sensitive topics such as Palestine and 9/11.

This guide is one way CAIR-NJ works proactively to help prevent anti-Muslim bias, misunderstandings, and incidents in our schools.

I lost my father exactly one year ago at this time. He was my greatest teacher, and a literal giant in the lives of many. I wrote this piece to honor the many ways he lives in my craft and life even after his physical presence ceased to exist.

Shame on South Orange & Maplewood School District somsdk12 for distributing and approving trips to Israel for administrators. The district is allowing a deliberate obfuscation, delivered by an outside political organization, to shape how our district leadership thinks and teaches. You heard this dynamic play out in real time during public comment at the last BOE meeting, where a speaker invoked a visit to a Holocaust museum to define what constitutes "true genocide." This outrageous framing functions to delegitimize Palestinian suffering and whitewash both current and historical events. This is not an exception - a review of coverage of similar NJ superintendent trips to Israel further illustrates the curated, intentionally erasure-driven nature of these programs. Where are the Palestinian voices? Where is the exposure to the lived experience of Palestinian civilians, the over 70,000 killed since October 7, the more than 900 killed since the supposed ceasefire, the generations displaced since 1948 in the ongoing Nakba, the families watching illegal settlements encroach on what remains of their land in the West Bank?

We demand:
1. An immediate prohibition on accepting free trips organized by the Jewish Federation or comparable organisations.
2. The district to enforce its own policies governing gifts and travel at all times.
3. A public apology by Mr. Bing acknowledging this lapse in ethical leadership.
4. A commitment that district resources will not be used to promote or normalize the actions of any state engaged in genocide.
5. Mandatory training on the history of Palestine; the genocide in Gaza; and anti-Palestinian racism, Islamophobia, and discrimination in our schools that center Palestinian voices.`
