What do Tom Morello, Bruce Springsteen, and an extraordinary history teacher have in common?

The remarkable legacy of Mary Morello.

I had the opportunity to interview legendary Rage Against the Machine guitarist and activist @tommorello at @teachrockorg inaugural Teachers Hall of Fame Gala, where he accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award honoring his late mother, Mary Morello, who passed away at the age of 102.

Mary was so much more than the mother of a rock star. She was a public high school history teacher, civil rights activist, and fierce opponent of censorship who believed in the power of education to change the world.

Tom and I talked about why teachers matter, the power of music in education, and how TeachRock is bringing history and other subjects to life through music.

And about halfway through the video, you’ll see a special moment from the gala when Bruce Springsteen presents Tom with the award honoring his mother. 🎸

As a public high school history teacher myself, this conversation was especially meaningful. Mary’s life is a reminder that the influence of a great teacher extends far beyond the classroom.

Another pic from last night’s Teach Rock gala!

TeachRock’s first Teachers Hall of Fame honorees were Tanya Peterson from Asbury Park, New Jersey; Kathy Durham from West Wendover, Nevada; and Patrick “Mac” McGuire from Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

Teachers doing the daily work of reaching students, encouraging their curiosity, and helping them find their voices. I loved seeing that work celebrated onstage.

The evening also honoured the late Mary Morello, an educator and activist, with a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Bruce @springsteen and accepted by her son, Tom Morello. ❤️

Stevie Van Zandt received his star on the Count Basie Walk of Fame, surrounded by an extraordinary gathering of musicians, friends, and supporters. But what made the evening especially meaningful was Stevie’s decision to share that spotlight with four deserving teachers honored through TeachRock.

That’s what I love about this work. Music brings us together, but education helps us carry its lessons forward for our children.

With Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Tom Morello, Pete Davidson, Jeff Ross, Kool & the Gang, and so many others celebrating, the evening was filled with music, friendship, and joy.

Grateful to serve on the Rock and Soul Forever/TeachRock board, to celebrate alongside so many remarkable people, and to close out the visit with a beautiful brunch among our fellow board members, and the amazing TeachRock team, and SVZ!

A little purple haze (lots of timezones of travel this week) and a lot of joy. Until next time, New Jersey.

Steve Van Zandt’s Teach ⚡️ Rock Fundraiser was a blast including Ron Aniello, John Bon Jovi, Pete Davidson, Jeff Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morello and more

They raise a lot of money to inspire kids to be educated through the power of music 🎶
