Stevie Van Zandt lit up Fallon last night. He’s still the loudest truth-teller wherever he goes.

Whether he’s on stage, on screen, or in the classroom,
His message has always stayed the same.

Music matters.

"In 1968, I was that kid sitting in the back of class wondering what any of this had to do with my life. If TeachRock.org had been around then? Everything would've been different! Music is history, culture, and the story of who we are--and TeachRock has delivered that to 1 million kids! That means there are only 49 million students left to go--you can help reach them by heading to Teachrock.org and donating this Giving Tuesday.

We were all students once--let's see your photo. Post it and tag me and @teachrockorg and tell us about the teacher you remember and how TeachRock might have impacted your school years. We'll repost our favorites. " - SVZ by @teachrockorg

What do Tom Morello, Bruce Springsteen, and an extraordinary history teacher have in common?

The remarkable legacy of Mary Morello.

I had the opportunity to interview legendary Rage Against the Machine guitarist and activist @tommorello at @teachrockorg inaugural Teachers Hall of Fame Gala, where he accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award honoring his late mother, Mary Morello, who passed away at the age of 102.

Mary was so much more than the mother of a rock star. She was a public high school history teacher, civil rights activist, and fierce opponent of censorship who believed in the power of education to change the world.

Tom and I talked about why teachers matter, the power of music in education, and how TeachRock is bringing history and other subjects to life through music.

And about halfway through the video, you’ll see a special moment from the gala when Bruce Springsteen presents Tom with the award honoring his mother. 🎸

As a public high school history teacher myself, this conversation was especially meaningful. Mary’s life is a reminder that the influence of a great teacher extends far beyond the classroom.

❤️ Please watch the whole conversation. It’s less than three minutes and worth every second.

Who was the teacher who changed your life? Tag them below so we can celebrate them! taken in Count Basie Center for the Arts by @teachrockorg

“No improvement necessary. It was perfect.” — Stevie Van Zandt 🎶

A special rehearsal became an unforgettable moment when Stevie visited 40 students at Amani Public Charter School in Mount Vernon as they prepared to perform at TeachRock’s Teachers Hall of Fame Gala.

Through Sing for Hope, these young singers are finding their voices, expressing their emotions, and experiencing the power of music—including performing Stevie’s own “Out of the Darkness.”

This is why we work to keep the arts in the DNA of public education. ❤️

Thank you to Marvin Scott and PIX11 for sharing this inspiring story!

“Before she was an icon, Dolly was a working musician.”

Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” reached the top of Billboard’s Country, Hot 100, and Adult Contemporary charts. It earned an Academy Award nomination, two Grammy Awards, and became an anthem for working people everywhere, especially working women.

Dolly didn’t just write about dignity at work. She showed it in her actions, treating her band and fellow musicians with integrity, solidarity, and respect. Dave Pomeroy of Nashville’s AFM Local 257 said she set the “gold standard” for supporting the musicians around her.

For educators, Dolly stands out as a role model for a lesson taught in classrooms across America:

Treat others as you want to be treated.

Check out TeachRock’s “Women’s Perspectives in Country and Tejano Music” to see how Dolly and other groundbreaking artists used music to challenge expectations and speak up for women’s rights.

🔗 Explore the lesson through the link in our bio.

Thank you, Dolly. 💛
