As we celebrate women’s week, I want to specially celebrate these beautiful ladies who were open and vulnerable enough to share their stories with me on The Way We Are documentary. @esther_uwagwu @sayo_thebeloved @wemspearl @iamofficial_debbie_ Thank You Ladies. When we premiered The Way We Are at the Lagos Fringe Festival, one of the audience mentioned being surprised that the ladies in the documentary had that kind of experience, considering how beautiful they all look. I looked at her, smiled at her and told her, “That’s the thing with beauty standards. It’s not that you are not beautiful. Earlier in the year, I teamed up with my friend @iamizuoba to tell a story dear to my heart. I used to work in an environment where I was constantly told “what to look like” and “what to dress like”. I remember being shouted at for not wearing makeup and for rocking my natural hair. It was a very confusing period and even though no harm was meant, my self esteem was greatly affected by this experience. This experience gave birth to this documentary, “The Way We Are”. It is my hope that every woman who sees The Way We Are feels empowered and confident in how they look, in The Way They Are.
