1 Week Out 🇨🇦

Been chomping at the bit to get back on the ice since coming home in January.

Just as the temperature is dialling up in Australia I’ll be trading it for the incoming cold of Calgary.

Keen to bring over some new faces and get to work in the ice house😤

📚Education Day: The first stride starts before the athlete’s feet hit the ground.

Coach Ano breaks down the “hit” and fall into the sled: how the the speed of the trunk drop and the athlete’ ability to alternately decelerate and control the fall into the appropriate hit angle all influence the timing and power of that critical first stride.

Executing it well requires trunk control - intermuscular and interneuromuscular coordination across joints - that must be intentionally developed through training.

Every detail matters. Every movement has a purpose. We’re leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of better performance.

🏆 Happy National Coaches Week! 🏆

This week, we’re celebrating the coaches who help push our athletes to be better—on the ice, in the gym, and beyond. ❄️💪

To our Alberta Bobsleigh coaches: thank you for sharing your knowledge, your experience, your time, and your passion for the sport. From long days spent at the facility, to carefully planning training sessions, you’re there to challenge, support, motivate, and believe in our athletes every step of the way.

Your impact goes far beyond results. You’re helping build confident athletes, strong teammates, and the next generation of Alberta bobsleigh. 🏁

Thank you Ano, Justin, Taylor, Quin, and Tara for everything you do for our team! ❤️#nationalcoachesweek #bobsleigh #coach @team.paes @the_.juice @taylorllaustin @quinsekulich @redhorse1c924

📚Evaluation creates direction. Intention drives progress.

Following our monthly Evaluation Week, our athletes gathered at the Ice House to reflect, learn and better understand what comes next as they prepare for the season ahead.

Evaluation is not simply about recording testing results. It helps us identify where each athlete is now, and how they perform under pressure - and the testing itself teaches them to learn to perform on demand. They come to understand what they need to develop personally to continue to progress, and how their training can become more purposeful.

…But testing only has value when athletes understand the whys behind it, results in the appropriate context of the yearly training plan, and adhere to the plans given to them. We want them to learn to approach each training+ session with intention.

Technical Director, Tara McNeil, spoke about the whys of testing, training adherence, and purposeful preparation - as did her mentor, Dr. Stephen Norris (former Director of Sport Science for Canadian winter sports across four Olympic cycles). He stopped by to share some invaluable words of wisdom about being intentional to achieve long-term performance excellence. Dr. Norris first introduced Tara to sliding sport, eventually leading to her work authoring Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development Framework for sliding sports.

Our coaches, Cristiano Paes, Taylor Austin and Justin Wilkinson, shared their perspectives not only as coaches, but importantly, as athletes. How to walk the walk. They shared not only about training and sled prep, but more meaningfully, gave incredible insight into the lifestyle of a slider - the realities of touring and what it takes to succeed as a teammate.

We are committed to giving our athletes more than test results or a training program. We want them to understand the whys of athletic development from every angle so they can take informed ownership of their progress - as sliders, other.

Performance by design. Not chance.

🧊 TRACK WALK: LEARNING FROM THE PAST 🏁

Our Alberta Bobsleigh team recently had the opportunity to walk through Calgary’s decommissioned bobsleigh track — a piece of local sporting history that helped shape the sport in Alberta.

A track walk is an important part of bobsleigh. Athletes use it to study the layout of the track, identify key corners and transitions, understand how the ice and terrain influence the sled, and visualize the lines they’ll need to take at speed.

Walking a decommissioned track gives our athletes a unique opportunity to learn without the pressure of racing. It’s a chance to understand how a track was designed, appreciate the challenges athletes faced, and connect with the history of bobsleigh in Calgary.

For our team, every track has something to teach us. 🇨🇦

Whether we are at the track, the field, or the Ice House our coaches bring years of experience, knowledge, and wisdom to every session, sharing what they’ve learned to help our athletes grow, improve, and become the best versions of themselves.

Because great coaching isn’t just about making you faster — it’s about passing on the lessons, building confidence, and helping the next generation chase their goals.

Grateful for the coaches who share their wisdom and help drive our team forward. 👊❄️
