Yesterday, our safe outdoor parking ordinance passed out of the Business, Housing, and Zoning Committee on a 6–1 vote. Thank you to everyone who showed up to City Hall and testified. The ordinance goes to the full City Council next Thursday, Oct. 29.

We heard from outreach workers who meet families living in their cars every day, and from people who have lived in their vehicles themselves and know how it feels to go to sleep afraid of being harassed.

We know that Duluth has a similar program which has operated since 2023. Emergency calls there have stayed low, skeptical neighbors and businesses have come around, and on-site staff have helped dozens of households move into permanent housing.

This policy creates a clear, regulated path for safe outdoor parking sites. It sets standards so sites are safe and well managed, it gives operators a licensing process with accountability, and it gives neighbors confidence that these
sites will be run responsibly.

We want to be clear, this is not a replacement for housing. We still need deeply affordable housing, we still need to fund our shelter system, and most importantly we still need housing first solutions. But we also have to meet people where they are today and data shows there are many of our residents living in their cars. Safe outdoor parking is a practical and proven tool that other cities have used successfully.

Minneapolis is considering a safe parking program that would let people experiencing homelessness sleep overnight in their cars at designated, supervised lots.
It’s not permanent housing, and it doesn’t solve homelessness. But it could give people a safer place to sleep, access to bathrooms and basic services, and a connection to outreach and housing resources instead of forcing them onto the street.

The full City Council is expected to vote on the proposal Oct. 29, with the program potentially taking effect Jan. 1, 2027.

This Wednesday, October 21st, we invite community members to pack the room and prepare public comment for the Health, Safety, and Equity Committee Meeting.

Our members will be providing public comment in support of the city auditor starting an after action review on MPD’s (mis)handling of Mariah Samuel’s’ case.

Thank you to council members @robin4mpls @aishaforward10 @jchavezmpls and @teamaurin for authoring this resolution to begin the process of finally getting answers, and hopefully justice, for Mariah’s family.

Mariah Samuels, a black mother of two, was killed on September 14, 2025 by her ex partner, after repeatedly reporting abuse and fear for her safety to the Minneapolis Police Department. Her calls went unheard, despite the emergency order for protection, granted to her by a judge, just two weeks prior to her murder.

Mariah should be here today. There’s nothing we can do to bring her back to her family and her children, but we will continue to fight for answers and accountability for all officers involved in failing Mariah.

We will also continue to demand the resignation of Mayor Jacob Frey, who has sole authority over the Minneapolis Police Department and the establishment of an All-Elected Civilian Police Accountability Commission.

While workers waited for six hours for a meeting with the Mayor, several Council Members stopped by to express support for the co-enforcement program, and for the workers who were at City Hall fighting to save it. Thank you to Council Member Whiting’s staff, Council Member Stevenson, Council Member Chowdhury, and Council Member Chughtai for spending a few minutes listening to workers today, and committing to restore funding for co-enforcement!

Along with my coauthors, Council Members @sorenwithward8, @aishaforward10, and @teamaurin , we will be holding a public hearing on our safe outdoor parking ordinance next week in the Business, Housing, and Zoning Committee. It will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.

Safe outdoor parking will allow safe, managed parking lots where people can sleep in their car overnight. This will help people avoid tickets, towing, or forced displacement. Safe parking is meant to help people stay safe and get connected to services, support, and housing. If enacted, this program would provide an alternative to sleeping on the street. Under the ordinance, safe outdoor parking sites would be managed by a non-profit, religious organization, or government entity.

If this sounds like something you support and you are available, please show up at City Hall next Tuesday and speak up on this policy that is a step forward in keeping people and communities safe.

“I’m not the same mayor as I was when I took office back in January of 2018. I’m not the same human being.”

TWO opportunities for you to show up in person this week and DEMAND that our voices are heard regarding how our money is spent. If our government won’t make sure the people in our city are cared for, we will.

dates, times, locations etc. are on the last slide. see you later this week, Minneapolis.

26.2 miles. First marathon. ✅

I am in A LOT of pain today, but I am so incredibly proud of myself. I’m deeply grateful for my family and friends who encouraged, supported, and believed in me every step of the way.

I promised myself I would run my first marathon before I turned 30, and at 29, I did it!

Most of all, I have so much gratitude for the greatest legislative aide and campaign manager, @g.eorgiabarnes . Georgia ran the entire marathon, finished, made a sign, and then came back to cheer me on. 🥹 She has also been one of my greatest sources of support throughout this entire summer.

And a HUGE thank you to @wisconsinlarson , who literally physically dragged me from mile 22 all the way to the finish line. I truly could not have done it without you.

To everyone who completed their first marathon or their 55th — congratulations, friends. WE DID IT! 💜🏅

And thank you to every volunteer who showed up along the course, cheered us on, handed us water, and helped get us to that finish line.

I ran these 26.2 miles with @wildflyercoffee because every young person experiencing homelessness deserves a safe place to call home and a community that cares about them.

If you’re able, please consider donating and supporting their incredible work. Every contribution makes a difference.

The donation link is in my bio!

📣 TOMORROW: Show up for Minneapolis workers!

Amazon Labor Union co-founder and former president Chris Smalls has a message for Minneapolis: show up and support the more than 10,000 rideshare workers whose livelihoods are at risk as Big Tech brings autonomous vehicles into our city.

Workers Drive Minneapolis is about making sure technological innovation doesn’t come at the expense of the working people who keep our city moving.

Come testify in support of Workers Drive Minneapolis:

📅 Tomorrow, September 29
⏰ 1:30 p.m.
📍 Minneapolis City Hall

Big Tech will make its voice heard. Workers need us to make ours heard too. ✊🏾

Show up. Testify. Stand with workers.

This past weekend felt like I through-hiked the entire campaign trail at once.

I was thrilled to join @nelsonformn and @kellymorrisonforcongress for a partner door knock event in Anoka. I joined my fellow @mn_fps & @mfelocal59 endorsed candidate Shannon Gibney (and a bunch of neighbors and educators) for Powderhorn Porchfest and the annual Wildcat Cabaret. I was humbled to be hosted for a fundraiser by @jchavezmpls, Ian Brauer, and @teamaurin, and then for a backyard gathering by @margaritaquetzal.

Even though I feel like a wet noodle, I am reminded that this is how I wanted to campaign; by showing up.

I’m showing up because I believe that we need a strong @minnesotadfl trifecta to keep Minnesota moving forward and bring more of our money back into our schools. I’m showing up to delay the unnecessary and chaotic changes laid out in MPS’s “Transformation” plan. And most importantly, I’m showing up because I love my community.

Minneapolis’ schools need leadership, stability, and a plan for enrollment growth. Let’s go build that.

The City of Minneapolis is asking for public input on proposed new zoning regulations for data centers.

With data centers expanding rapidly, in part because of increased demand from AI technology, the City is considering new rules around where they can operate, how large they can be, reporting of energy and water use, and noise impacts.

Minneapolis residents can review the proposed policy, submit feedback online, or share comments at the Planning Commission public hearing:

October 13 at 4:30 p.m.
Public Service Center
250 S. 4th St., Room 350

Learn more and review the proposed regulations through the City of Minneapolis.
