Along with my coauthors, Council Members @sorenwithward8, @aishaforward10, and @teamaurin , we will be holding a public hearing on our safe outdoor parking ordinance next week in the Business, Housing, and Zoning Committee. It will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.

Safe outdoor parking will allow safe, managed parking lots where people can sleep in their car overnight. This will help people avoid tickets, towing, or forced displacement. Safe parking is meant to help people stay safe and get connected to services, support, and housing. If enacted, this program would provide an alternative to sleeping on the street. Under the ordinance, safe outdoor parking sites would be managed by a non-profit, religious organization, or government entity.

If this sounds like something you support and you are available, please show up at City Hall next Tuesday and speak up on this policy that is a step forward in keeping people and communities safe.

Yesterday, I celebrated Indigenous People’s Day at the Sunrise Ceremony at Bde Maka Ska with our community and my colleagues on the City Council. Indigenous people have always been here, and will continue to be here. This is native land. ☀️

What’s going on at the hands of our President is a part of a fascist playbook, to weaponize the DOJ against his political opponents. I need all of us to use our discernment, raise our awareness, because we cannot stop fascism though silence.

The pre-dawn raid on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home is in league with the pattern of abuses of power by this president. This is a naked attempt to interfere with an election 3 weeks before ballots are to be cast.

Trump has weaponized the DOJ to target his political opponents, manufacturing charges that have been roundly dismissed by court after court. This isn’t new. This isn’t an accident. This is the plan.

He is deeply unpopular and dragging candidate in his party down. So now he’s doing this raid against our congresswoman followed by the targeted attack on our Somali American community to incite racial resentment and potential violence- his language “fight back” was intentional. I’m going to ask all of us to reach our people who are not as tapped in, to be tapped in as this continues to unfold. We can’t be divided.

We have a democracy, and we have it if we can keep it. I stand with Ilhan. We can’t be silent in the face of fascism. The raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar weeks before an election is naked an attempt to interfere with it.

Joined SEIU Members and SEIU President April Verrette @seiupres for a doorknock to re-elect our Attorney General Keith Ellison & elect Peggy Flanagan to U.S. Senate 💚💙💜

Early voting is happening now! Join me in these last 24 days before Election Day to turnout the vote. We can’t expect people to turn out, that work is on us.

Our Minneapolis City Council Crew, @elliottforward1 & @sorenwithward8 pulled up to knock to talk about candidates up and down the ballot who are running to help afford our lives. Working people deserve a government that works for them.

Special shout out to the several Rideshare drivers who were there — their fight to protect their jobs is in solidarity with the fight for every worker to be protected in their workplace. by @teamaurin

Somali Minnesotans are a part of the fabric of our communities. They are our neighbors, friends, coworkers, and fellow Minnesotans. I stand in solidarity with our Somali community who deserve to feel safe, respected, and welcome in the place they call home. ❤️

As Minnesotans, we know who we are. We aren’t falling for these lies from dishonest actors spreading disinformation and hateful, divisive rhetoric about our immigrant neighbors. I call BS, and you should too.

We can’t stand by while our Somali community faces discrimination, racism, and xenophobia. They should not have to face this alone.

I call on everyone, especially those with power and a platform to do what Minnesotans do, check on your neighbor and stand up to injustice.

The Minneapolis 2027 City budget is one of the most consequential our city has faced in years. It’s not too late to learn about the budget and get engaged. Here’s a baseline:

• The Mayor proposed an 11.3% levy increase. An average $409/year tax increase. Ward 12 residents could see an average 20% increase.

• On 9/29, the Board of Estimate & Taxation approved a maximum 11.87% levy increase. This is a ceiling, not the final budget.

• The $2.3B proposed mayoral budget is an austerity budget: despite higher taxes, several programs and 100+ positions would be cut, with parts of City government restructured.

• We face a $60M+ budget gap because the cost of maintaining current services exceeds incoming revenue.

• The gap is driven by rising labor/operating costs, inflation, expiring pandemic-era federal funding, declining downtown commercial property values, and significant unforeseen MPD overtime spending tied to vacancies, emergencies, leave, and overtime mismanagement.

• State law requires us to balance the budget. Council will now hear department presentations, engage residents, and make difficult choices about investments, cuts, and the final levy.

I’ll continue unpacking this budget, sharing my positions, and listening to Ward 12 residents and Minneapolis.

My main priority is ensuring you get the quality services you deserve and we have a budget that doesn’t forget working class community members who are often marginalized by government.

Public Hearings on:
Oct 7., Oct 19., & Dec. 15 all at 6:05pm at City Council Chambers at City Hall on the Third Floor.

📣 TOMORROW: Show up for Minneapolis workers!

Amazon Labor Union co-founder and former president Chris Smalls has a message for Minneapolis: show up and support the more than 10,000 rideshare workers whose livelihoods are at risk as Big Tech brings autonomous vehicles into our city.

Workers Drive Minneapolis is about making sure technological innovation doesn’t come at the expense of the working people who keep our city moving.

Come testify in support of Workers Drive Minneapolis:

📅 Tomorrow, September 29
⏰ 1:30 p.m.
📍 Minneapolis City Hall

Big Tech will make its voice heard. Workers need us to make ours heard too. ✊🏾

There has been so much engagement on Data Centers in Minneapolis— and resoundingly people do not want to face the harms of them, they want policy that prioritizes the people’s interest over the interest of big tech. We need the strongest regulatory framework possible.

That’s why I’m hosting a panel & discussion on Data Centers and will share updates on the policy work to regulate them with @minneapolisward8

We want you to inform our work ahead of the public hearing on October 13 at the Planning Commission (4:30 at 250 S 4th St) on the Data Center regulations that will be up for a vote.

When: Thursday, October 8th | 6:00-8:00PM
Where: Sabathani Community Center

Statement on Minneapolis Public Schools Transformation Plan (Slide to see list of Schools for Proposed School Closure)

I’ve spent time talking with families and educators, and after watching the three-hour plus meeting on the Minneapolis Public Schools transformation plan, I’m left with serious concerns.

MPS has not made its case to our community. What has been presented feels more like a mass school closure plan than a clear path to strengthening our public schools and bringing families back.

I was struck by the lack of a clear response to the financial challenges facing MPS, how this plan addresses them, the fact that 14 schools are proposed for closure and that fact was buried at the presentation. There was also no analysis shared on how this would improve enrollment and how we can work on bringing families into MPS.

In the 12th Ward, Hiawatha and Howe Elementary is proposed for closure, and nearby Longfellow Alternative School would also close. These are schools where educators have worked incredibly hard over the years, often with limited resources, to support students and families. These are schools that came together as hubs of resilience during our communities time of need during operation Metro Surge.

I am asking the School Board to slow down. Please do not rush this, this work is far too important and community trust is at stake. Delay the vote and work with the community to develop a better path forward.

An insufficiently noticed 10 days of engagement is not adequate for a decision of this magnitude.

This will leave out families of color especially those with language access needs and working families that cannot make these meetings if they work shifts outside of 9 to 5. There’s no sugarcoating it, the process is excluding voices.

If you are an MPS family, caregiver, community member, or educator— the most important thing you can do is show up and give feedback:
