I got this wrong as a parent to start with!
When my son started racing, I got far too caught up in the results. I wasn’t willing a future WorldTour career for him, but I placed more importance on winning and losing than those results deserved.
When he was around 12, I started noticing things that made me question my approach.
Kids who had seemed unbeatable were disappearing from the sport. Parents shouting at races, children in tears afterwards, and far too much pressure around something that should have been enjoyable.
I started looking more closely at how young riders develop.
We put more emphasis on learning, skills, enjoying racing and riding with mates. Some of those friendships have lasted to this day.
I also started using process goals rather than judging everything by finishing positions.
Those experiences changed my approach as a dad and have shaped how I coach youth and junior riders today.
Over the coming weeks, I’m going to share some of those experiences, the things I’ve learned and a few things I’d approach differently now.
If we want young riders to fulfil their potential, the priorities need to be different.
I’m interested in other people’s experiences too.
What’s been your biggest lesson from youth cycling — as a rider, parent or coach?

A big couple of weekends as we come towards the end of the season...

@connor.robinson_21 and Phil were in action at IMCA , where Connor took an hour off of last year's time to duck under 9 hrs and Phil had a great day till the weather caught up at the back end of the run

@tridan33 was in action in Kona, delivering his best overall performance on the island

@clairehebgrimmer and @wrighty313 were in action in Málaga ending the season with solid performances across the board

@clarabell64 and @sprintymcginty were in action at sgrail

@vickiepullin smashed the IFSS European champs

The season isn't finished yet, we've still got athletes in action at Florida, 70.3 la quinta, and several marathon Pbs to come , whilst with others were making plans how to hit 2027 stronger

2026 — THE NEXT GENERATION

What a year for this group of young riders!

From national titles and international victories to European podiums, classification wins and some fantastic individual progression, there’s been plenty to be proud of.

But not everyone’s season has followed the same path.

Some have enjoyed breakthrough years, others have had to deal with setbacks, injuries and illness. What matters is the progress they’ve made and the work they’ve put in along the way.

It’s been a real pleasure coaching these eight riders throughout 2026, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they can achieve next year.

A massive well done to Freddie, Milo, Sam, Mark, Otto, Seth, Gaspard and Ben.

Making the post of some late-season post-12-hour-TT form by making @bottrillmatthew coaching life as hard as possible. The last 4 consecutive weekend I’ve raced 4 different events with 4 totally different training demands. From a 50mile TT down to a 3 minute hill climb. Together we created a training plan which has guided me through it all and had me producing some of my best ever power numbers after a long year of focus.

In two weeks time the @cyclingtimetrials National Hill Climb Championship will be my last race of the year, so a final push to end the season with one more result I can be proud of!

Porlock Toll Road Hill Climb hosted by @mccycling - 8th place in 16:15.0

This is the same course as the nationals later in the year so it was nice to get a recce ride in a set a benchmark! I’m hoping to get under 16 minutes on the day and improve on 35th place up The Struggle in 2023.

Welsh 50mile TT Championship - 1st place in 1:39:54

I DNF’d this race last year and had unfinished business with it. Very pleased to get another 30mph ride in the bag and race my 5th 50mile TT of the year.

The @uobcycling Hill Climb up Belmont Hill - 6th in 3:04.3

This is always a great event, closed roads and crowds similar to the nationals! As painful as 3 minutes max efforts are I keep going back and this year was I rewarded with a substantial power PB and time 0.2s off of a PB!

The @cyclingtimetrials National Closed Circuit Championship - 10th and Team Win in 23:01

At 11.4miles it was an unfamiliar distance for me and on a course I’d never ridden before. Having not ridden my TT bike as much as I should in the last few months I was quite unsure about how I would go but I was pleasantly surprised by my ride. I rode a negative split for power and speed and I’m very happy that my last TT of the year is one I can look back on and say “I nailed that”, it’s very motivating for next season.

🥈 2nd at the National Closed Circuit Championships

It’s been a long season, and I think a hard reset is well overdue. Looking forward to some time off the bike, recharging the batteries and having a bit of a breather before starting to think about next season. ❤️

Season summary soon, but first…. 🇮🇹🍸👀

Watching the content from Kona fires me up to get out there next year

It's no secret I race a lot . And I think this year it caught up with me. After Swansea and Almere the body was tired, so I've made the decision to call the season and rebuild for 2027.

Getting back to performing and the top and in the big races is what motivates, and I think this is the best plan to get there

Good luck to all racing today!! I'll be tracking from afar!

Hill climb season has truly started. Not my forte, but always fun to give them a good wack. With nationals this year being local and 4miles long. It's something to aim for and finish the season with. With the goal to beat my best placing of 55th a couple of years ago when it was up the Struggle.

So far 11th at Porlock toll road open (same as course as nationals) which I went out hard and suffer in the 2nd half.
Followed by Zig Zag run by @aeroclctv where I can away with 6th with 3rd in a mixed team with @prontobikesraceteam. Not quite the best legs, but a course with a bit of everything and emptied the tank. Which I'll definitely return next year to.

Only X2 races left of the season for next. National circuit champs at Thruxton (aka the best racing circuit in the UK) and the national hill climb at Porlock. Let's get it!

The 10th edition of the Banter TT 🥳

£3,140 raised for @macmillancancer and @cr_uk taking the total to £33,050 🫡

Is this now Britains No.1 TT with 114 riders taking part. I would say so 🙂

Thanks to everyone who took part again this year 💙
