This time last Sunday, the heart of North Philly was beating strong on 26th & Ridge. ❤️💪🏾

Family, friends, and neighbors gathered to honor the life of Paul “Unk P” Gripper with a powerful mural dedication that felt like a true homecoming.

The afternoon was filled with heartfelt speeches, shared memories, and stories that reminded us just how deeply Unk P impacted the community, especially the young men he mentored through basketball. His laughter, presence, and love were felt in every word, every hug, and every moment.

This mural, designed by @nilelivingston and produced by @customartsstudio is more than paint on a wall—it’s a tribute to a man who showed up for his people, day in and day out.

Swipe through to witness a Sunday filled with legacy, love, and community.❤️

Today we honored the life and legacy of Paul “Unk P” Gripper with a mural that reflects the joy, heart, and guidance he brought to North Philly. A true giant, Unk P used basketball as a bridge to mentorship, scholarship, and manhood.

We’re losing too many of our kids, not because they lack talent or potential, but because they lack mentors. Systems have failed them, so we have to show up stronger.

Let this be a call to action: step up. Pour into our young people. Be present. Be loud. Be love. 💪🏽💛

cont’d from previous post… What I see and feel in Philly today is that we lack mentors. So much of the pain, grief, and sadness that manifests as violence is because we don’t have enough good mentors and elders. And we lack mentors and elders because of poverty, scarcity, spiritual apathy, and systemic oppression/racism.

In the Healing Wisdom of Africa, Elder Malidoma Patrice Some had a beautiful section on mentors and young folks. He says,

“Any assistance offered needs to rest on the premises that the young person is not insane or misbehaving. It needs to honor the value of the depth of experience going on in the psyche of the [young person] whether or not one understands it completely. By doing so, the psyche of the [young person] registers it as availability or even care. This care that sometimes becomes love plants the seeds of change in the [young person].”

As complicated and complex as a human that our dad was throughout life, in his final years and days on this earth, he was the most selfless, caring, curious, and gentle that I’d ever seen him. He stepped fully into the role of mentor.

On Saturday (7/26), we hosted the 4th Annual Unk P Memorial Classic, a series of basketball games featuring some of Philly’s top 8th grade and high school players. Our goal has been to continue my dad’s legacy and commitment to basketball and mentorship. Every year we try to host this event around his birthday, which is today!

Happy 56th birthday, daddy! 🕊️

Speaking of mentorship, immediately following the game, we linked up with @muralarts to host a MURAL dedication for Unk the very next day (7/27). It was incredible. People came out to show love for Unk. As young buls shared what he meant to them, one of my dad’s friends leaned over to me with tears streaming down her face and said “this is the first time I feel like ive been able to grieve his death.” Throughout the day, we heard deep and heartfelt reflections of the impact that Unk left on people’s lives and the imprint he left on their hearts.

I also had the opportunity to share a few words contextualizing what happened to my dad back in March/April 2020. After sharing how he experienced medical neglect and ablism, and how systemic racism led to his death, I said:

Our grief felt so big and heavy. For me and Joey, this was our 2nd parent to pass away. It also felt massive because it was during the early stages of the pandemic and everyone was quarantining and afraid to be together.

But still so many people came to sit with and be with us.

Because of legal restrictions on gathering, we were only allowed to have 10 people at the funeral. This made it feel like we had to shoulder the grief and weight on our own with immediate family.

But then dozens and dozens of daddy’s basketball family showed up to the burial. It was in that moment that I realized this grief was not just ours but collective.

In addition to being a father to me, Pauly, and Joey, daddy was a mentor and father-like figure to hundreds. He took kids to tournaments, fed them with his last, and sometimes called us for gas money to take a kid to practice or a workout…
