"1969 I came into this world today. Now 50 years later I reflect onto a beautiful and fulfilling life. I don't apologize for who I am and what I became. I just want to thank God for giving me 50 years of life, especially when I was told that I would not live to see 1990. Life is good... enjoy yours like I do." — Unk P (July 31, 2019 💙)

Today we celebrate your life and legacy. Your love for God, your family, your children, and the countless young people you coached continues to inspire us. Though you're no longer here with us, your impact lives on in every life you touched.

Happy Heavenly Birthday Unk P!

You were a light, a protector, a real one. A coach who did more than just coach—who showed up for people, day in and day out. You gave your time, your love, and your wisdom to the community, and you changed lives just by being who you were.

Your legacy lives on in every person you poured into, and now forever on the walls of this city.❤️

We miss you every day—but today, we celebrate you.🥳🎂🎉

🖤 Love you always. #UnkPForever #PhillyLegend #HappyBirthdayUnkP by @teamgripper

On Saturday (7/26), we hosted the 4th Annual Unk P Memorial Classic, a series of basketball games featuring some of Philly’s top 8th grade and high school players. Our goal has been to continue my dad’s legacy and commitment to basketball and mentorship. Every year we try to host this event around his birthday, which is today!

Happy 56th birthday, daddy! 🕊️

Speaking of mentorship, immediately following the game, we linked up with @muralarts to host a MURAL dedication for Unk the very next day (7/27). It was incredible. People came out to show love for Unk. As young buls shared what he meant to them, one of my dad’s friends leaned over to me with tears streaming down her face and said “this is the first time I feel like ive been able to grieve his death.” Throughout the day, we heard deep and heartfelt reflections of the impact that Unk left on people’s lives and the imprint he left on their hearts.

I also had the opportunity to share a few words contextualizing what happened to my dad back in March/April 2020. After sharing how he experienced medical neglect and ablism, and how systemic racism led to his death, I said:

Our grief felt so big and heavy. For me and Joey, this was our 2nd parent to pass away. It also felt massive because it was during the early stages of the pandemic and everyone was quarantining and afraid to be together.

But still so many people came to sit with and be with us.

Because of legal restrictions on gathering, we were only allowed to have 10 people at the funeral. This made it feel like we had to shoulder the grief and weight on our own with immediate family.

But then dozens and dozens of daddy’s basketball family showed up to the burial. It was in that moment that I realized this grief was not just ours but collective.

In addition to being a father to me, Pauly, and Joey, daddy was a mentor and father-like figure to hundreds. He took kids to tournaments, fed them with his last, and sometimes called us for gas money to take a kid to practice or a workout…
