@technologiesofblackcare, a collective Co-Directed by @moss.portals & I, are presenting a Textile Talk on MEMORY PATTERN today with @quiltalliance. This project means so much to us and sometimes it feels like it was all a dream ✨ 35 Black textile enthusiasts, ages 18 - 80, from across Canada and the US came together on Zoom for a month to sit in the legacy of Black quilt histories. We’re honouring the oldest running Black Quilting Guild, Daughters of Dorcas, by creating a collaborative quilt of our own. I think about those sessions every week as the urgency to hold tender intergenerational Black spaces close becomes more and more apparent. We’re so grateful to the artists who participated and to @quiltalliance for supporting the work!

If you’d like to hear more about MEMORY PATTERN head to this free talk at 2pm EST 🪡 Link in bio.

Join the Quilt Alliance on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at 2pm EDT for presentations by the 2024 Ardis James QSOS Scholars.

Ashley Jane Lewis, Carey Flack and Stephanie Dyke will present educational and creative projects that use the Quilters’ Save Our Stories archive of more than 1,200 recorded oral histories with quiltmakers. Register for free at the link in our bio!

Ashley Jane Lewis and Carey Flack of Technologies of Black Care Collective will talk about MEMORY PATTERN, a collaborative 4 week quilting project in tribute to Black textile communities of the past, present and future.

Stephanie Dyke’s project dovetails with her recent work studying Dr. William Rush Dunton Jr.’s quilt collection, and use of handcraft as occupational therapy for his mentally ill patients in the early- and mid-1900s. She will share a 3-dimensional, multimedia, quilted piece which utilizes snippets of the QSOS interviews.

Posting my square for the upcoming @technologiesofblackcare quilt. I mostly used applique and embroidery to create the scenery. I didn't have a concept before starting it so I just stitched one together (pun intended) with motifs from the different fabrics I have at home. This was definitely a feat considering how rudimentary my sewing and embroidery skills are. Can't wait to see what the full quilt ends up looking like

ID: 5 colorful quiltblocks, one in each slide. they are all positioned on a green cutting mat with snips, threads, scraps and sundry littering the background. the first 2 are takes on the cathedral window block (created by Black quilter Ms. Viola Canidy), the next is a version of a Jacob's ladder and the last is a simple four square block. each has multiple multi-patterned fabrics in gemtones and florals.

Working on a quilt square featuring Muriel Rebecca Hazard Shepard aka Grama Shepard. She taught me to crochet and cross-stitch.

I’m delighted to be part of the inaugural cohort of ‘Memory Pattern’ organized by @ashleyjanelewis, @moss.portals and @technologiesofblackcare. It’s been a joy and a delight to be in conversation and community , learning black quilt histories, craft histories, and technique the last couple weeks, and I look forward to finishing my square ✨
