“When I was younger I was invested in and driven by accuracy, but for me what’s much more interesting is the mysterious and the unknown and the emotional resonance of something. I am now drawn much more to work that’s inaccurate.” @teddy_ridgeway

For stencil monotype printmaker @teddy_ridgeway, curiosity, gratitude and questions are the starting points for his craft. Symbols found in nature and his dreams are layered to tell a story that each person is invited to interpret in their own unique way. “I want people to meet the work where they are. We’re all meeting each other where we are in our lives.”

The week of August 10–14, we hosted the first pilot iteration of the New Suns Independent Graduate School Artist Residency in Vermont.

We gathered at our @newsunscommunitycenter in East Thetford, Vermont, a space with an auditorium + stage, ceramics studio, two kitchens, a Liberation Lending Library + reading room (aka makeshift sewing studio), and THREE PIANOS.

We were incredibly lucky to have our own Taylor Barnes @fulljoyfarm with us to teach the cohort three days of intensive improvisational movement + dance - experiments in writing, performance, sound, and embodied practice.

Our small pilot cohort brought together multidisciplinary artists working across textiles, music composition, dance, puppeteering, printmaking, and multi-instrumentation. Throughout the week, we also took field trips into the local community. Importantly: the residency was family-friendly.

Kids ages 4, 10, 12, and 13 joined us throughout the week—making, playing, learning, and experimenting alongside the adults.

The experiment is:

🌱 interdisciplinary
🤝 collaborative
🌎 land-based
👧🏽👩🏽‍🎨 intergenerational
☀️ based in radical imagination

We’re trying things. Learning by doing. That type of thing.
