Want to explore your creativity in a fun and supportive environment? Join me for monotype printmaking classes, where we will use classic printmaking techniques to cultivate our ability to observe, to draw, and to express ourselves visually. These classes are open to folks of all ages and levels of experience!

Printmaking offers us a process of transforming what we see and feel into tangible images. It is a wonderful method of discovery, allowing for experimentation and a pressure-free technique to try out new visual ideas.

We will work together to hone our powers of observation, switch on our innate drawing skills, and facilitate our gift for emotional expression. Connecting the eyes, the hand, and the heart.

“Absence tears open a hole, one through which we can glean the strangeness of this altered reality, trying to find our footing as we step through.”

My essay, A Dress-Shaped Hole in the Sky, is included in the Spring 2026 publication of The Journal of the California Society of Printmakers.

I attempted to put into words the journey of the last several years, after losing my wife Leila, and how a creative outlet opened a path for me to seek grounding and healing through visual expression in the face of uncertainty.

My friend @wrrenren introduced me to a stencil monotype technique that has since become a practice I employ to illustrate this emerging existence, touching on the confusion of grief as well as exploring a future that contains the possibility of connection and understanding.

Recalling the feeling of watching Leila gather lemons in the yard a few months before she passed, images came into focus that seeded the ground of what was to come - gathering hands reaching through branches, a woman kneeling collecting fallen fruit as a black cat walks past. The interplay between the ancient act of harvest and the inferred realization of approaching mortality served as a foundation for the prints that followed.

I embraced the experimentation of arranging stencil shapes in improvised relationships, reflecting the assemblage attempts at finding focus in the wake of loss, and the incorporation of new ideas drawn from much reading, walking in the woods, and contemplation.

An essential channel for these ideas was The Flowering Wand, by @cosmogyny , which introduced me to a powerful symbol of both the sacred masculine and the creative energy that manifests in stewardship of and communion with the generative power of the natural world. A motif that shows up in these works, it began as a hand grasping a staff exploding in a riot of life. As the boundary between subject and environment dissolved, it has been woven into the embodied self, where tattoos become incarnate, leaves grow from arms, and wounds are the source of fresh green shoots.
