Tag a friend who needs to see this post. Before it’s too late for them

Losing your child to suicide is an indescribably horrible feeling. Whatsmore, when you see them slowly slipping away, particularly during their teenage year, it can be daunting to find a way in. What question will result in a blow up? What is "ok" and the "right" thing to say? The truth is there is no one answer to this question, but we can better prepare ourselves for these discussions and issues if they arise.

- get them talking- Do not barge into their room and proclaim a need to talk. This sets the stage for a tense discussion, and they feel they are being reprimanded. Instead, do this during a time you are both more open to discussion: in the car headed to school, headed to practice, watching a tv show together, erc. We cannot stress the importance of netflix and chill.

-stop fixing: it is easy to want to fix everything for your child, but you won't always be able to. That is reality. Instead, just let them know you are not there to judge or fix, but listen. Be vulnerable and maybe offer a story first. You may be surprised by how much they open up to you.

approach the topic indirectly- It may be a weeks or months long process, but when they do open up, be sure you are listening. If you think you can push a topic, delve deeper into the specifics. If they are actively planning self harm, it is time to call a professional.

Sometimes "they're just being a teenager" goes deeper than that.

I was 12 when my depression symptoms started and 13 when I swallowed a bottle of pills. Talk to kids but especially teens. Talk TO them, not AT them. Give them grace and don't be dismissive of their problems, no matter how small it may seem to you.

Remember they're just going through all this stuff for the first time. Think of the last time you had to deal with a situation for the first time. Now imagine that situation was life in general.

Cut the kids a break and remember to keep an eye out for signs that the mood swings might be more than them just "being a teenager".

If you need anyone to talk to please don't hesitate to reach out. Also, in my role as Diversity & Equity Fellow with NAMI DE, I'm available to do presentations for organizations regarding mental health. We have standard ones and I can also customize them.

Pleasr remember resources like @namidelaware , @namicommunicate, @mentalhealthamerica, @trevorproject , and several others are available to help.

I have a soft spot in my heart for teens and young adults. Their’s is a weird and tricky time of life – you’re not a kid anymore yet you’re not experienced in adulting either. And today’s youth have the added burden of a pandemic, environmental uncertainty, and school shootings. Being a teen right now is TOUGH.

Matt Richtel, in his New York Times article “‘It’s Life of Death’: U.S. Teenagers Face a Mental Health Crisis” (4/24/22), says:

“In 2019, 13% of adolescents reported having a major depressive episode. Emergency room visits by children and adolescents…rose sharply for anxiety, mood disorders and self-harm. And for people ages 10 to 24, suicide rates leaped nearly 60%.”

Richtel goes on to point out that a “severe shortage of therapists and treatment options” adds to teen’s mental health crisis.

I pray that Cue Cards for My Happier Mind can be one element to help stem that shortage.

I created Cue Cards initially for my sons, aged 17 and 19, in the chance that they might need them. But as I was writing the cards, my imaginary audience was a girl sitting in the back of a bus on her way to high school. I imagined her feeling lonely and off-kilter. I could see her scrolling on her phone trying to distract herself from the dread of the day. I imagined that my girl had come across Cue Cards (which are all available to view for free on www.myhappiermind.com) And so I wrote each card to my girl-on-the-bus in the hopes that she’d know she wasn’t alone. In the hopes that a card would ignite a little light in her, a gleam of hope, a tiny chuckle, a gentle “a-ha”. And that over time, on those morning bus rides with Cue Cards flickering on her phone, she’d get a little stronger, a tad happier, find a tiny bit more resolve, feel love, notice beauty… And that the trajectory of her life would, by shifting a centimeter or two, feel more like the life she deserves.

If you know a teen, would you let them know that they can come to this site any hour of any day? Here they will find my best attempts – as a fellow traveler through feelings of sadness, dread, and despair – at offering light and love.
