Just one week remains to see “Subvert, Repair, Reclaim: Contemporary Artists Take Back the Nude “ at @mfaboston.

The exhibition sparked national conversation around Xandra Ibarra’s “Nude Laughing,” a performance that invited audiences to confront the politics of looking, vulnerability, and the museum itself. But in her review for Boston Art Review, @teeqeetee considers how that work sits within a larger exhibition in which curators Carmen Hermo and Yutong Shi bring together twelve contemporary artists to revisit the nude through photography, sculpture, painting, and mixed media.

Rather than offering a single response to the gaze of the Western art historical canon, the artists employ strategies of concealment, repair, revision, humor, and self-fashioning to challenge the racialized, gendered, and colonial histories embedded within it.

Read Thea Quiray Tagle’s review at the link in our bio before the exhibition closes August 2.

Now available for download! “The Reader (Volume 1)”, 626 pages, PDF, 250 MB. 📕 Link in bio

The Reader (Volume 1) is a furtive collection of beloved teaching texts and the result of an invitation to thirty-three contributors (twenty-seven artist/educators and six critical art theorist/educators) to share with me a reading or text that they consider significant to their teaching and practice. Gathered in conjunction with the 2025-2026 exhibition “Stephanie Syjuco: Present Tense (Roll Call)” at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), the submissions were printed on letter-sized paper and pinned up directly onto the oversized wall installation for the duration of the ten month exhibition. Fluttering in the breeze, the printed pages curl, rustle, and add a sense of aliveness to the work, ultimately gathering together a chorus of voices reflecting larger bodies of knowledge. As I share in the exhibition text it is “a love letter to teaching and learning during fraught times.”

As educators we regularly read and collect books and PDFs — often downloaded from the internet as furtively uploaded files, or generously shared by like-minded colleagues. We annotate into the pages, scribble, photocopy, scan, duplicate, print, and create lo-res variations of the originals for our own personal and teaching purposes. We excerpt the content, turning them into lesson plans shared with students, thus creating a cyclical distribution of inquiry and learning. We also write, and in a few cases the submissions are original self-authored texts. *The Reader* is an homage to the myriad forms of hidden work: the artist/educator as community and public intellectual, a creative synthesizer of ideas in connection with others.

Full list of contributors in slides 🔥. “Present Tense (Roll Call)” is still on view at @bampfa until June 28, 2026! Stay tuned for future volumes to amplify ideas and knowledge in a time of silencing and disinvestment in education🔥

Ugh, can’t tag more than 20 people, will add in comments soon…

is happy to announce that the PCAI collection artists Basel Abbas & Ruanne Abou-Rahme present Prisoners of Love: Until the Sun of Freedom at The Bell Gallery at Brown University in Providence, RI.
Prisoners of Love represents the latest project from sound, video, and installation artists Basel Abbas (b. Nicosia, Cyprus, 1983) and Ruanne Abou-Rahme (b. Boston, 1983). Both hold Palestinian heritage. Featuring interviews with former political prisoners made on location in Palestine, the exhibition celebrates poetry, music, and art as forms of expressing individual and collective survivance within systems of incarceration across time and space.
Kate Kraczon and Thea Quiray Tagle are the co-curators of this project at The Bell / Brown Arts Institute, an extension of the artists’ ongoing relationship with Kraczon, who produced their first US exhibition and catalog in 2015 at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

A heartfelt thank you to @CulturedMagazine for featuring The Bell Gallery's @bellgallerybrown current exhibition — Prisoners of Love: Until the Sun of Freedom — the newest project by internationally renowned sound, video, and installation artists Basel Abbas @basel.abb and Ruanne Abou-Rahme @ruanne.ar, on view at The Bell at Brown University, February 18 – May 31, 2026.

Co-curated by Kate Kraczon @katekraczon , Director of Exhibitions and Chief Curator of the Bell Gallery at Brown University's Brown Arts Institute (BAI), and Thea Quiray Tagle @teeqeetee , Associate Curator of the Bell Gallery and BAI, this powerful exhibition celebrates poetry, music, and art as forms of individual and collective survivance within systems of incarceration across time and space.

Featuring interviews with former political prisoners made on location in Palestine, Abbas and Abou-Rahme continue their use of opacity and fragmentation as they navigate institutional archives and documentary materials — incorporating concrete, fabric, and weathered steel as the projection surfaces of this immersive sound-based video installation.

I first visited the Bell Gallery at Brown three years ago—nearly to the day. I was attending the opening of @elisabethsubrin’s The Listening Takes, and hit up the opening to see the brilliant @katekraczon in conversation with the artist. It was a show I went back to again and again, one that I ended up writing about, and in writing about it I learned a few things about Kate. Firstly, that she was a curator artists would follow; they described her as a champion, a collaborator, an ally who could be trusted to help realize their visions but also temper their impulses. I learned from attending it again and again that she was a professional who put faith in space, confident in the ability of art to speak loud in quiet places. That she recognized the role of communal experience in shaping a show—that she didn’t find a challenge to be at odds with an invitation.

Later, through shows like Barbara T Smith: Proof and Eric-Paul Riege: ojo|-|ólǫ́, as well as through her writing for @bostonartreview, I got to know the fiercely intelligent @teeqeetee. I came to appreciate the ways in which she saw and felt deeply, that she could articulate how artists could best present themselves to the world, that she was unafraid of candor or difficulty, and that she understood that beauty often blazes brightest when pared down to a beating, bloody core.

Last night, I attended the opening for @basel.abb and @ruanne.ar’s Prisoners of Love: Until the Sun of Freedom. This immersive installation, commissioned expressly for the Bell, will be the last show mounted by Kate and Thea, as Brown has let both of them go, a move that—by every measure—will be the institution’s loss. While I’m not sure what will happen next for that space, I find it hard to imagine that it will recapture the essence of last night: a room packed to the rafters with art lovers from near and far, all engaging with important, difficult themes rendered large but tender, epochal but intimate. Hundreds from our communit(ies) out on a cold winter night to support the artists, but also two women who have gifted us over and over and over again.

Using strategies of opacity and fragmentation, Abbas and Abou-Rahme incorporate concrete, fabric, and weathered steel—carceral architecture—as the projection surfaces of this sound and video installation to build, in the artists’ words, “a vast counter-archive to document Palestinian life.” “Enemy of the Sun” (1970), by acclaimed Palestinian poet Samih Al-Qasim, foregrounds the installation; this poem was mis-attributed to Black Panther George Jackson and memorialized in the Black Panther newspaper following his 1971 murder in San Quentin prison. Found handwritten in Jackson’s cell, the poem evokes the long relationship between Black political prisoners in the United States and Palestinian political prisoners.

Moments of exchange between Abou-Rahme and Abbas with Brown’s community have been underway since 2020, with Kraczon connecting them to Nadje Al-Ali, Robert Family Professor of International Studies and Professor of Anthropology and Middle East Studies at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES), where they were the opening speakers in a series of talks, events, and exhibitions in 2022 jointly organized by CMES and the Middle East Institute at Columbia University on the topics of art, gender and body politics in the Middle East and its diasporas. Abou-Rahme and Abbas have been working with curators at Brown’s John Hay Library since 2023, conducting research in the university’s archival project “Voices of Mass Incarceration in the United States” among other international archival sources. In Spring 2025, Quiray Tagle and the artists developed and taught a graduate and undergraduate research-based course, co-taught with Kraczon, that furthered the artists’ research towards The Bell presentation while enabling students’ own research into family archives, community-based archives, and other untold histories of mass incarceration.
