Published now in the Journal of Curatorial Studies: “Rethinking Curatorial Ethics with Allison Glenn, Risa Puleo, and Thea Quiray Tagle.” Thank you, Faye Gleisser, for organizing this opportunity to write more deeply about my practice of relational curation. I hope this is a resource for folks coming up in the field, or whomever wants to know how we three try to do right by artists and communities in/despite the institutions we are working with.

I also recognize the deep irony of this piece being published a month after I left my institutional position for reasons akin to some of the cases I discuss in this piece. I maintain now and always that this relational work matters— and also know in a very different way that in our current political and social realities, curators and other art workers will never be able to simultaneously work in right relation with artists and communities and survive within institutions.

If you’re having trouble accessing the full article, DM me! My complete contribution is above.

Happy Pride, beloveds ✊🏽🌈

I am so honored to share with you this audio tour of AIDS activism and memory in New York City, a project spearheaded by Lola Flash @flashnine9 and just published by @themuseumofmodernart Magazine. I am the “young one” adding a different generational perspective on AIDS memory, but you must listen to the five legendary artist-activists whose stories and experiences are moving beyond measure: Lola Flash, Pamela Sneed @pamela_sneed, Agosto Machado; Aldo Hernandez @aldo.h.hernandez, and Idris Mignott @eye_mignott. This is truly an honor of a lifetime to be included here in any way! Link in bio and here: https://www.moma.org/magazine/articles/1222

Hi everyone. Made a public Instagram account for all things curatorial and research related, as well as to amplify and share the work of others! For new followers: hi. You might have found me through AFTER LIFE (we survive), a show I’ve curated now up in person and online @ybca. The themes of the #afterlifeybca show— or how artists can help us envision more just futures for our BIPOC and LGBTQ communities in the midst of ecological collapse and other forms of slow and spectacular violence— pretty much sums up the work I am most invested in doing, whether it’s in the classroom, or writing on the page, or helping present through public exhibitions. Let’s build the futures we want to see, together. You can follow me here and learn more at http://theaquiraytagle.com

I am thinking today of all the queer icons who have left us too soon: Prince, Bowie, Freddie, Dolly, now Tim. Their lives and legacies continually remind me to live freely and to put out beauty that really matters for our collective growth, transformation, and healing.

This vessel, a “wedding vase” by Mata Ortiz artist Gerardo Ledezma Veloz, is also another reminder to pour into myself with as much love as I pour into others. It is a recent addition as a gift to myself for my own major life transitions, a reminder that the best love or marriage is the one we have with ourselves and our chosen kin (human and animal) beyond the nuclear family. This is another queer lesson that is so invaluable for the times we are in.

I don’t usually wax poetic on this public account, but the eve of the Pisces lunar eclipse and the collective grief over Dolly and Tim requires it, I think.

Sending big love to y’all through the screen. Be well always ❤️ by @teeqeetee

Now at @hyperallergic, my report on this year’s SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market. There were so many generous and brilliant artists I met and talked with, it was impossible to include them all. I just hope that my piece did this incredible Market and the artists justice. There is so much more to say, but also… it’s more important that folks attend for themselves. There is really nothing else like it.

Omaha is a sweet city and these 2 1/2 weeks as a curator-in-residence at @bemiscenter have been so rejuvenating, productive, and fun! Thank you to Rachel Adams and Carlie Waganer for the invitation, to this residency cohort for being amazing, and for all the pups who kept my bb Hopey company in the prairie! I’ll be back again I’m sure.

Just one week remains to see “Subvert, Repair, Reclaim: Contemporary Artists Take Back the Nude “ at @mfaboston.

The exhibition sparked national conversation around Xandra Ibarra’s “Nude Laughing,” a performance that invited audiences to confront the politics of looking, vulnerability, and the museum itself. But in her review for Boston Art Review, @teeqeetee considers how that work sits within a larger exhibition in which curators Carmen Hermo and Yutong Shi bring together twelve contemporary artists to revisit the nude through photography, sculpture, painting, and mixed media.

Rather than offering a single response to the gaze of the Western art historical canon, the artists employ strategies of concealment, repair, revision, humor, and self-fashioning to challenge the racialized, gendered, and colonial histories embedded within it.

Read Thea Quiray Tagle’s review at the link in our bio before the exhibition closes August 2.
