An international arts experiment. Hundreds of collaborators from cities across the planet playing the game of TELEPHONE from art form to art form.

Holy crap!! I found out that 2 scholarly papers I wrote about the TELEPHONE project have been accepted for publication. One is for a book being published by Routledge, edited by Dr. Oz Hardwick at Trinity. Another is a paper I wrote for a book being published by Bloomsbury, edited by Dr. Rachel Carney at Cardiff University. Then, same day, I get an email from Dr. Tong King Lee, Professor and Head of the School at University of Hong Kong, with a paper he wrote about TELEPHONE that’s being published by Oxford University.

All of them are coming out in 2027. Like... WHAT!?!

Guys?! Guys. I’m like a super fancy and very famous intellectual academic philosopher king now. I understand that many of you figured me for a drunken hobo, but no. If anyone needs me, just ring the buzzer at the doorstep of the ivory tower because I’ll be way up in the rarified air, just like... pondering stuff in the realm of spheres.

Broken semaphore
Typically who shows up
When yours doesn't ring.

Dear homies, here’s a badass project that is near to my heart. Jack Ramsey started the Seattle Collaboration Society. They’re running interdisciplinary improvosation sessions on 2nd Thursdays, 6pm - 8:30pm out of Ballard Homestead. These are sessions for musicians, dancers, painters, writers, artists of any sort, to practice free improvisation and experiment together.

If you know me, you know that I wholeheartedly believe that this sort of cross-pollenation between art forms and disciplines is the quickest way to make giant strides forward, both for art and for our city. The best, most chaotic, most fruitful and fun parties and scenes are the ones in which all the art forms are smooshed together, influencing and pushing each other. Think Paris in the 1920’s or New York in the 70’s.

Follow these homies and participate! They’ve got big plans in the future, including large scale performances of the most successful early collaborations. This is EXACTLY what the city of Seattle needs right now. LET’S GO!!!

Looking back on ‘25

Angry Lemon God in the Sky. I made this as part of a giant, collective art project called Telephone.

Can you see the ghosts of the Kintsugi project in there?

Almost 1400 artists got together, each making a piece of art that was inspired by a piece of art that was sent to them, which in turn went on to be the inspiration for another artist. A message passed from artist to artist like the game of telephone.

I got a poem that at first I didn’t know what to do with, and then devoured, and loved. I don’t know a whole lot about poetry but I love how much can get packed into so little. Just a few lines and it can take weeks to figure out.

Also I want to be in more collective art projects. Being part of a community is something I want more of in ‘26. Art making can be very solitary. Invite me to your art projects please!

Diptych I made for Telephone 3, a response to a prompt of two masks. Reminded me of Janus. @telephone_community #acrylicpainting #painting #portraitpaintingnow #contemporaryart

🫵🏾 👉🏾👉🏾👉🏾 Tomorrow at @wow.cafe & @thenotoriousrbj for live TELEPHONE (@elephone_community & @nathan.m.langston ). Prelude to… #3 — an organized confusion on the road to radicalism. inner voice plus noise equals resonance. You are needed. You are present. You are a part of it. Spaces are neither safe nor private; they are public and intimate when the point and field of view remain quiet; then the self becomes the many. I’ll be holding the space, creating sound, and developing collective intimacy. What collective warmth sounds like. Saturday 13th. Link in bio.👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾

As 2025 comes to a close, with the final @belltownartwalk of the year, and the closing of the Telephone Exhibition at Base Camp Studios 2 we’re revisiting Don Smith’s “Departing Gift” with a special closing performance/ceremony/ritual in collaboration with Stella Kutz this Friday, 12/12 between 8:30-9pm.

Here is an excerpt of Don’s poignant process statement:

“I like the idea that, in that space you exist between life and death. A witness to both, but outside of either. Possibly in that space, and only for a moment, are you immortal. What if in that space, in that tiny moment, while it feels like a flash for those outside of it, maybe for the one inside that space it’s hours, or days, or weeks, or years.

Maybe in that moment, where you get to experience both sides, you get to be inside of the system and outside of the system. Maybe you have a better view. Maybe you get to see the entirety of your corner of the system. The turning of the wheel or the flow of the river.

A chance to see from a perspective that you never could have held while on either side entirely. Maybe you can see clearly for the first time where you’ve been, where you are, and where you’re going. This clarity of vision, this understanding, this perspective that lets both sides make sense, is a gift we are given only when we reach that space. Our final gift as we depart is understanding our place in the system.” 💜

… And as some things come to an end, other new things begin. Preview our new collections space as we prepare to launch something reeeeeeal nifty in 2026 🤘🏽🤩
