When Jesus' words get the preacher into trouble…

What happens when the words of Jesus challenge our assumptions, unsettle our congregations, or take a sermon somewhere we hadn't expected?

We're delighted to welcome back Rev. Scott Hoezee, a longtime friend and veteran participant of the Lester Randall Preaching Fellowship.

An ordained pastor in the Christian Reformed Church and founding director of Calvin Theological Seminary's Center for Excellence in Preaching, Scott brings decades of experience as a preacher, teacher and author.

At LRPF '26, he'll lead the workshop “Quoting Jesus: When Jesus' Words Get the Preacher into Trouble and What to Do about It” and join Rev. Dr. Sarah Han as a mentor for Fine-Tuned Preaching.

Can somebody actually follow Jesus through a screen?

In this Day1 interview, host Rev. Dr. Katie Givens Kime and Rev. Dr. Jason Byassee explore digital-age discipleship, Christian community, and what technology can—and cannot—offer the life of faith.

“Community is happening in those letters.”

Byassee points to the New Testament itself: relationships of faith formed and sustained across distance through the technology of letter writing.

What might that teach us about Christian community today?

“Only God made us. Only God can repair us.”

In this sermon clip, Rev. Dr. Jason Byassee reminds us that God's work isn't finished.

“And God is working on that now, through such flawed people as you and me.”

What changes when we trust that God can work through us even in our imperfection?

What happens when the people called to help heal the world need healing, too?

For Proper 23, the 20th Sunday after Pentecost, Rev. Dr. Jason Byassee turns to Exodus 32 and the story of the golden calf in “The Firetruck in the Ditch.”

It’s a reflection on idolatry, human failure, and the God who keeps working through imperfect people.

Where might we be tempted to put our trust in something we can control?
