Can somebody actually follow Jesus through a screen?

In this Day1 interview, host Rev. Dr. Katie Givens Kime and Rev. Dr. Jason Byassee explore digital-age discipleship, Christian community, and what technology can—and cannot—offer the life of faith.

“Community is happening in those letters.”

Byassee points to the New Testament itself: relationships of faith formed and sustained across distance through the technology of letter writing.

What might that teach us about Christian community today?

Join us on Tuesday, October 13 at 12 pm as Oscar Rangel presents Lignum et Umbra - La Madera y la Sombra, a solo classical guitar recital exploring the instrument’s darker, atmospheric side. Blending classical repertoire, original music, and cinematic soundscapes, the program moves through memory, folklore, shadow, and quiet intensity.

Rangel is a Mexican-Canadian guitarist and composer whose work bridges classical tradition, contemporary storytelling, and evocative sound design. Conceived especially for resonant historical spaces, Lignum et Umbra invites the audience into an intimate world where wood, stone, silence, and music seem to remember one another. taken in Timothy Eaton Memorial Church by @temc.toronto

“Only God made us. Only God can repair us.”

In this sermon clip, Rev. Dr. Jason Byassee reminds us that God's work isn't finished.

“And God is working on that now, through such flawed people as you and me.”

What changes when we trust that God can work through us even in our imperfection?

What happens when the people called to help heal the world need healing, too?

For Proper 23, the 20th Sunday after Pentecost, Rev. Dr. Jason Byassee turns to Exodus 32 and the story of the golden calf in “The Firetruck in the Ditch.”

It’s a reflection on idolatry, human failure, and the God who keeps working through imperfect people.

Where might we be tempted to put our trust in something we can control?

He gave us eyes to see them
And lips that we might tell
How great is God almighty
Who has made all things well

All things bright and beautiful
All creatures great and small
All things wise and wonderful
The Lord, God made them all by @temc.toronto

A Prayer for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Holy One, Child of Life,
Great Spirit.
We meet you in the
company of ancestors
and in the presence of people
praying throughout the world
connected by a longing for
peace and healing.

Open our hearts.
Make us ready for reconciliation
as we long for the joy of a future of
peace and healing.

Help us attend well to stories
we need to receive.
Awake in our hearts
with stories of residential school
Survivors and their kin
and loved ones.

Together, we weep for children,
then and now.
For braids, beads, new moccasins.
For parents
whose children were taken.
For children
whose tongues were silenced
when they lost their languages and names.

Awaken our spirit, O God.
Help us to hold these stories faithfully
so they may transform
and become part of us.
May our prayers be translated
into compassion.
And may our amen be this truth.

Indigenous sisters, brothers, siblings.
We receive your stories.
May they lead us in wisdom.
And may we journey together
in love.

Amen. by @temc.toronto
