THEMES FROM CHAKA BY AKIN EUBA
Themes from Chaka is a dramatic piano work by Akin Euba, adapted from the prelude to his 1970 opera Chaka, based on Leopold Senghor's poem about the nineteenth-century Zulu king. The opera portrays Chaka as both a brilliant military leader and a ruthless tyrant, combining Western instruments such as the flute, clarinet in b flat, Horn in F, trombone, DoubleBass, timpani and synthesizer with African instruments such as the agogo, talking drums, slit drums, sekere, gudugudu, and atenteben (Ghanaian flute) flute.
The piano version is programmatic and consists of four sections, each introduced by the recurring Conscience Theme. Euba creatively translates the orchestral and African instrumental textures to the piano by distributing their thematic fragments between the two hands. The work highlights rhythmic and dramatic interplay, particularly between the talking drum and agogo in the second section of the piece, while the final section strongly reflects Euba's concept of African Pianism through the imitation of African instrumental rhythms and melodies of the Atenben flute and the Gudugudu on the right hand accompanied by the Talking Drum 1 and 2 and the single headed drum in the left hand.
The piece exemplifies Euba's philosophy of intercultural musicology, blending Western, African, and Yoruba musical traditions into a unified artistic expression.

In a moment of stillness and sound, Octaaf Chorale Ensemble offers Thankful by Josh Groban @joshgroban —music shaped by gratitude and carried with quiet strength.
With piano accompaniment by Temitope Aina @temitopeaina_ and organ colours laid by Ezekiel Babalola @babslord , the ensemble unfolds each phrase with intention and grace. The beautiful solo was taken by @zeezzii_ 👏👏
Under the thoughtful direction of Tope Olagunju @olagunju_tope , the choir weaves harmony and meaning into a shared expression of reflection and praise.
Performed live at the Viaje Musica Concert, 2026, this rendition stands as a reminder of the beauty found in collective voice, careful listening, and thankful hearts.

Some music stays with you long before you ever perform it.
Examine Me by Cedric Dent @cedricdentsr is one of those pieces. Rooted deeply in the Adventist choral sound, shaped by the same musical world that gave us Take 6—with Dent himself as a baritone voice from that lineage.

This piece was first encountered through the moving performance of the Oakwood Aeolians @oakwoodaeolians , under the direction of Jason Max Ferdinand @jmaxferdinand . That sound lingered… quietly shaping taste, faith, and musical direction over the years.

So when Octaaf Chorale Ensemble @oct_aaf finally performed Examine Me at the Viaje Musica 2026 Concert, it felt like more than a performance. It felt like a long-held dream finding its moment.

Conducted by Tope Olagunju @olagunju_tope
Piano: Temitope Aina @temitopeaina_ (Convener, Viaje Musica)
Organ: Ezekiel Babalola @babslord

Andrew Lloyd Webber didn’t just write Phantom of the Opera, he Unleashed it! 🔥

PS: You would never know how technical this piece is until you have to perform it in a hall full of people, without a microphone or any sound amplifier 💪😃.
