One week from today, WRTI and Temple celebrate the centennial of Philly jazz legend Jimmy Heath.
*
*
One of the greats to emerge from Philadelphia’s royal jazz legacy, Heath left his mark on generations of musicians — including Terell Stafford (@terellstafford) his friend, touring bandmate and mentee. Heath even gave Stafford the nickname “Staff Inflection” and Stafford consulted Heath when he was forming the Temple U jazz department.

Celebrate Heath’s 100th birthday with the Temple Jazz Orchestra at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25.

Come experience the concert live on Temple’s campus or tune in to WRTI for the live broadcast!

Watch the full conversation from The Late Set with Terell Stafford on WRTI’s website, YouTube channel or wherever you get your podcasts.

Bell Thompson is an award‑winning trumpet player and composer from Seattle, currently based in New York City. Her playing celebrates the jazz tradition of swing and hard bop, while showcasing her vibrant tone and exciting sense of melody.

Bell studied at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she completed her qualitative research project Gender and Jazz: The Experience of Young Women in Jazz Education. In 2024, she earned her Master of Music in Global Jazz from the Berklee Global Jazz Institute.

💿 Her debut album, Most Prized, was released in March of 2026, as a musical love letter to the friendships, mentors, and community she found living in Philadelphia.

So incredibly grateful for the opportunity to perform with the Temple Jazz Orchestra in Italy, France, and Spain this summer! We had a busy 11 days of performing and exploring in Nazzano, Rome, the Marciac Jazz Festival, Santander, and Dénia!

So grateful I got to visit Italy & Spain for the first time, learn valuable lessons from @terellstafford and @jazzy_gentleman, and make treasured memories with the TJO fam ❤️🫂
