A look back at the opening day of Undertow / Contre;Courant, part of the Art Explora Festival at B7L9 Art Centre.

Sunday, October 25 brought together the exhibition opening, followed by a live performance by glacier | preset by Enrico Dau Yang Wey — Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre, and a DJ set by STILL B2B Palm Wine on the rooftop.

Curated by Amanda Abi Khalil and Danielle Makhoul, Contre ; Courant / Undertow brings together artists exploring migration, exile, memory, family ties and cultural exchange across the Mediterranean.

Through diverse artistic practices, their works trace the experiences of people who cross the sea, those who wait, and those whose lives are shaped by its borders.

Together, they reveal stories of movement, displacement, belonging and the complex histories that connect the Mediterranean.

Originally presented aboard the Art Explora Festival’s itinerant museum-boat, Undertow arrives at B7L9 in Tunis in a new exhibition format, offering visitors a closer encounter with the works and the stories they tell.

‎ما الذي يختبئ تحت السطح؟

‎يجمع معرض ضدّ التيّار / Undertow، بتنسيق أماندا أبي خليل ودانيال مخول، تسعة فنانين يستكشفون الهجرة، والمنفى، والذاكرة، والروابط العائلية، والتبادل الثقافي عبر البحر الأبيض المتوسط.

‎من خلال ممارسات فنية متنوعة، تتتبّع أعمالهم تجارب الذين يعبرون البحر، والذين ينتظرون، والذين تتشكّل حياتهم على وقع حدوده.

‎وتكشف هذه الأعمال مجتمعةً عن حكايات التنقّل، والتهجير، والانتماء، وعن التاريخ المعقّد الذي يربط ضفّتَي البحر الأبيض المتوسط.

‎بعد أن قُدّم المعرض في الأصل ضمن جناح حاويات رافق المتحف العائم لمهرجان آرت إكسبلورا، يحلّ
‎في مركز الفنون B7L9 بتونس في صيغة عرض جديدة، تتيح للزوار الاقتراب أكثر من الأعمال الفنية والحكايات التي تحملها.

12 فنانًا و فنانة,
‎يستكشفون الهجرة والمنفى والذاكرة والروابط العائلية والتبادل الثقافي عبر البحر الأبيض المتوسط.

‎من خلال الأفلام والتصوير الفوتوغرافي و تطويع المواد الصوتية و الارشيفية توثّق الأعمال تجارب أشخاص يعبرون البحر، وآخرين ينتظرون، وأفرادًا تتشكّل حياتهم بفعل الحدود البحرية.

Meet the Curators
Amanda Abi Khalil & Danielle Makhoul

With backgrounds in curating, architecture, design, contemporary art and socially engaged practices, Amanda Abi Khalil and Danielle Makhoul bring diverse perspectives to the Mediterranean and its histories of movement and exchange.

Originally conceived for the Art Explora Festival, Undertow — Contre ; Courant travelled across Marseille, Tangier, Athens and Barcelona between 2024 and 2026.

Presented at B7L9 Art Centre in Tunis, the exhibition marks its first presentation in an institutional space, expanding on the original pavilion.

Named after an underwater current moving against the surface flow, Undertow explores the Mediterranean through themes of passage, migration, displacement, memory and resilience.

صمم في الأصل معرض ضد التيار / Contre ; Courant في الأصل ضمن مهرجان آرت إكسبلورا، و جال بين مرسيليا و طنجا و أثينا و برشلونة خلال الفترة الممتدة من 2024 و 2026

‎ويُقدَّم المعرض في مركز الفنون B7L9 في تونس للمرة الأولى ضمن فضاء مؤسساتي، موسّعًا بذلك المشروع الأصلي الذي عُرض في الجناح المتنقّل.

استُلهم عنوان «ضد التيار» من التيار المائي تحت سطح البحر الذي يتحرّك بعكس اتجاه التيار السطحي. ومن خلال هذا المفهوم، يستكشف المعرض البحر الأبيض المتوسط عبر ثيمات العبور، والهجرة، والنزوح، والذاكرة، والصمود.

What moves beneath the surface?

The Mediterranean is a sea of crossings — of departures, arrivals, waiting, memory and survival. Beneath its visible currents, stories continue to move, collide and resurface.

Originally conceived aboard the Art Explora Festival’s museum-boat, Undertow arrives at B7L9 in a new exhibition format, bringing together works by 21 artists that trace the human journeys and histories held within the Mediterranean.

البحر الأبيض المتوسط هومجال ممتد للعبور ، للرحيل، للوصول ،للانتظار وللذاكرة والصمود.

وتحت تياراته الظاهرة، تواصل الحكايات تحرّكها، وتتقاطع وتتلاقى، ثم تعود إلى السطح.

صُمّم معرض Undertow في البداية ليُقدَّم على متن المتحف العائم آرت إكسبلورا ويصل اليوم إلى B7L9 في صيغة عرض جديدة، تجمع أعمال 21 فنانًا وفنانة، تتتبّع الرحلات الإنسانية والتواريخ التي يحملها البحر الأبيض المتوسط.

PERFORMANCE | Quinta, 22 Outubro - 19h

Essa quinta estamos recebendo a artista Tamar Ettun que veio de Nova Iorque para a performance “How to Trap an Umbilical Demon”.

A instalação “Lilith’s Umbilical Cord” será montada em colaboração com o público ao longo do evento.

Tamar Ettun é artista multidisciplinar cuja prática transita entre escultura, vídeo e performance, explorando experiências corporais, trauma e rituais de cura.

Atualmente, é pesquisadora residente do Smithsonian no Hirshhorn Museum (2025–2026), onde investiga questões relacionadas à gravidez, maternidade, autonomia corporal e saúde reprodutiva.

Seu trabalho já foi apresentado em instituições como Walker Art Center, The Jewish Museum e Museum of Arts and Design. Integra a publicação Great Women Sculptors (Phaidon, 2024) e possui mestrado em Escultura pela Universidade Yale.

Ponto do Marido é uma intervenção artística de Franziska Pierwoss que leva às ruas do Rio de Janeiro perguntas sobre violência obstétrica, dando visibilidade ao tema e abrindo espaço para falar sobre ele. Conta com acompanhamento da pesquisa e supervisão de conteúdo da parteira Marilanda Lima e design de Maia Gama.

Integra o festival Evidence — Eu não serei o ovo que você quebra: sobre nascimento, o corpo e as evidências que ele carrega —, realizado pela TAP – Temporary Art Platform em parceria com o Instituto Comadre, com apoio do Goethe-Institut, do Consulado da França no Rio de Janeiro e do Juntes na Cultura.

Parceiras de veiculação: AlterLabs e Eletromidia.

Ponto do Marido is an artistic intervention by Franziska Pierwoss that brings questions about obstetric violence to the streets of Rio de Janeiro, raising awareness and creating space to talk about it. Research guidance and content supervision are provided by midwife Marilanda Lima, with design by Maia Gama.

The project is part of the Evidence festival — I won’t be an egg which you crack: On birth, body, and the evidence it carries —, organized by TAP – Temporary Art Platform in partnership with Instituto Comadre, with support from the Goethe-Institut, the French Consulate in Rio de Janeiro, and Juntes na Cultura.

“Ponto do marido” refere-se a um ponto extra, sem necessidade médica, dado após uma episiotomia ou laceração perineal durante o parto.

A episiotomia é um corte realizado por um profissional de saúde na região do períneo, entre a entrada da vagina e o ânus, para ampliar a passagem do bebê em situações específicas. Já a laceração perineal é um rasgo que pode acontecer naturalmente durante a passagem do bebê. Quando há necessidade, tanto o corte quanto a laceração podem receber pontos para reparar o tecido.

O chamado “ponto do marido” não faz parte desse reparo necessário. Trata-se de um ponto a mais feito com a intenção de deixar a vagina mais “apertada”, sob a crença de que isso aumentaria o prazer sexual do parceiro.

Uma intervenção é feita no corpo da mulher pensando em um suposto desejo do marido e não na saúde, no conforto, na recuperação ou no prazer dela. Esse ponto extra pode provocar dor persistente, desconforto, problemas de cicatrização e dor nas relações sexuais. Muitas vezes, é feito sem que a mulher seja informada e sem que possa consentir ou recusar.

É amplamente condenado como uma forma de violência obstétrica.

Laura Lima apresenta ‘Dopada’ amanhã, 18 de setembro, no MAM Rio, a partir das 16h.

Criada em 1996, ‘Dopada’ é uma das obras seminais de Laura Lima e revela uma prática na qual o corpo vivo — humano, animal ou vegetal — é tomado como matéria artística. No trabalho, uma mulher, envolta em um traje de crochê, dorme profundamente, fazendo de seu corpo uma escultura viva, em estado de suspensão.

A apresentação integra a programação do festival ‘Eu não serei o ovo que você quebra’, que, por sua vez, faz parte de Evidence, festival internacional do Fisher Center LAB, em associação com o Center for Human Rights and the Arts at Bard. Realizado no Brasil pela TAP (Temporary Art Platform), o festival tem direção artística de Amanda Abi Khalil em parceria com o Instituto Comadre.

Tomorrow, September 18, Laura Lima presents ‘Dopada’ (1996) at MAM in Rio de Janeiro, starting at 4 pm.

Created in 1996, ‘Dopada’ is one of Lima’s seminal works and reflects a practice in which the living body — human, animal, or vegetal — is treated as artistic material. In the work, a woman wrapped in a crocheted garment sleeps deeply, turning her body into a living sculpture in a state of suspension.

The presentation is part of the program ‘I Won’t Be the Egg You Crack’, itself part of Evidence, an international festival organized by Fisher Center LAB in association with the Center for Human Rights and the Arts at Bard. The program is presented in Brazil by TAP (Temporary Art Platform), under the artistic direction of Amanda Abi Khalil, in partnership with Comadre.
