The Rijksakademie is the hub for international artistic talent! Each year, only 25 talented artists from 124 countries are selected. Kwintus then chooses one artist to support, who becomes part of the Kwintus collection.

FRANSIX TENDA LOMBA
CHOC ÉCONOMIQUE

OPENING : SATURDAY DECEMBER 7, 2024
17-19 H, SPEECH 17.30 H

EENWERK presents the solo exhibition ‘CHOC ÉCONOMIQUE’ by Congolese artist Fransix Tenda Lomba. In his colorful and seductive paintings, drawings and sculptures, Tenda Lomba reflects on the history of the Congo and the country’s complex relationship with the West. The common thread running through the exhibition is the history of chocolate, one of the Congo’s best-known export products, very popular in the West, but at the same time with a complex history of exploitation and abuse of power. According to Tenda Lomba, chocolate is the source of all kinds of “shocks” in society, historically, socially and economically. Like chocolate, Tenda Lomba’s works are colorfully and seductively packaged, but a complex story lies beneath the surface.

“We are linked by cocoa, a bridge between all the world’s cultures” – Fransix Tenda Lomba..

Fransix Tenda Lomba (b. 1984) is a prominent contemporary visual artist from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. A fellow of the prestigious Rijksakademie, Lomba currently lives in Amsterdam. He began his artistic journey at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa, graduating in 2006. His diverse practice includes drawing, painting, sculpture, and animated video. Lomba is also recognized as one of the principal artists at Kin Art Studio.

Colonial history is always a tragic part of Africa’s past. During his residency at the Rijksakademie, Lomba initiated a research project titled Le choc est là. Inspired by chocolate, this project was developed simultaneously in the Red Garden in Morocco and in Switzerland. The title of the project has a double meaning, reflecting both the cultural and geopolitical shocks associated with the cocoa chain. The cocoa trade, originating from regions in West Africa and South America, has roots in colonialism, where the labor of enslaved people was exploited to meet European market demands. Lomba meticulously traces cocoa from its origins to consumers, highlighting the intertwined stories of personal and collective histories.

By juxtaposing personal archival materials from his family in Congo with visual content from major chocolate companies, Lomba creates large-scale drawings that serve as the foundation for his animated videos. These works comment on the bittersweet reality of cocoa production, revealing how the enjoyment of chocolate is often linked to historical suffering and exploitation. This exploration of cocoa serves as a powerful commentary on the legacies of colonialism and the ongoing impact of these histories on contemporary societies.

One of the works from the project was featured in a prestigious Dutch calendar, curated in collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Culture.

Fransix Tenda Lomba | THIS WONDERFUL WORLD
August 24 - September 21, 2024

Galerie Voss is pleased to announce This Wonderful World (Ce Monde Merveilleux), a solo exhibition by Kinshasa artist Fransix Tenda Lomba, opening on August 24th. Deeply rooted in his experiences, culture, and the socio-economic realities of the Congo, Tenda Lomba’s artworks offer insight into his personal philosophy.
Following from his series Le Choc est Là, where he references the economic, political, and social shocks triggered by the cocoa trade, Fransix Tenda Lomba continues to create a metaphorical ‘cocoa bridge’ that links people across the globe. Spanning from the origins of the beans in the Congo and surrounding countries, to the consumers in Europe and elsewhere, Tenda Lomba emphasises that we are all connected through cocoa. His work invites audiences to consider the contrast between the luxury of chocolate enjoyed by consumers and the hardships faced by those in the regions of production.
Archival material shapes the background of many of Tenda Lomba’s pieces, drawn from private archives such as those of his father’s journalistic years as well as global records from cacao companies. These elements tie his work to historical narratives yet also allow for reinterpretation, in an exploration of the interplay between past and present.
This Wonderful World exemplifies Tenda Lomba’s perspective of art as a medium for dialogue. His work is not just technical but deeply reflective, with his artistic process sometimes taking months of consideration before embarking on a piece. The exhibition echoes Tenda Lomba’s philosophy that is the necessity of cultivating one’s own sense of paradise - even in the face of difficult circumstances such as the socio-political turmoil of the DR Congo……Text: @asimxmm
