Thank you very much for joining “5th Annual Kanpai! to Sake Day in DC” last Sunday! 🍶

It was AMAZING to celebrate our fifth year with you. I’m so happy you chose to spend your Sunday with us, enjoying time with your friends and hopefully making even more new ones!

This year, to celebrate our fifth anniversary, the calligrapher Kakaku kindly offered to write something for us. It gave me a chance to look back on these five years, and the word I chose was 『酒縁』(shu-en), “sake encounters.”

Everyone who was part of this day and beyond… from our amazing partners and passionate teammates to, of course, YOU... we all connected because of sake. And I know those connections keep growing in places I never even see: making new friends and building communities of your own.

So here’s to looking forward to many more 『酒縁』 .
I’m already looking forward to saying Kanpai with you again next year!

Kanpai!

You’ve eaten at Ippudo East Village... but have you ever looked closely at our walls? 🍜✨

When we opened our NYC flagship in 2008, every single structural element was built with intentional Japanese craftsmanship (Shokunin):

🖤 The Washi Wall: Individual textured Washi papers hand-painted on-site using traditional Sumi ink. The contrasting patterns represent our diverse team coming together as one.

🎋 The Bamboo Installation: Designed around the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water)—expressing resilience, natural growth, and fire.

Next time you join us for a bowl of Akamaru, take a moment to look around—there’s a story in every corner.

Before your bowl of authentic Hakata-style ramen hits the table, there’s one non-negotiable starter 🍤✨

In 2008, we opened our doors in the East Village as the first-ever IPPUDO in New York City. Over 18 years later, our East Village flagship is still perfecting every single detail on the menu.

Case in point: our classic Shrimp Bun just got a house-made upgrade. We’re pairing golden jumbo shrimp tempura with a fresh, house-made tartar sauce, tucked inside a pillow-soft steamed bao with crisp lettuce.

It’s the ultimate crunch contrast to a rich, simmering bowl of Tonkotsu—and an absolute must-have for lunch or dinner in Manhattan NYC.

Reservations are encouraged but walk-ins are always welcome, or place a pickup/delivery order via the link in our bio 🥢

This past June, I brought together 14 of my clients, each representing years of commitment to Horimono with the work we’ve created together.

Some began with a sleeve and progressed into a bodysuit. Others approached their bodysuit from a full-body-outline before shading & color. While others completed the backpiece with no current goal to continue. Each tattoo was built to fit that person physically, compositionally, and spiritually.

Seeing these works together reveals something difficult to communicate through a single tattoo: Horimono is not simply a large tattoo, it’s a concise suit of talismans and ornaments, intended to become part of the person wearing it.

The shoot was a success, but what stayed with me most was something I hadn’t anticipated.

I watched people who had never met share stories and relate through something they had spent years investing themselves in. It made me realize there is an aspect of Horimono I have probably neglected: community.

I don’t mean “community” only in its modern, internet-era interpretation. Historically, Horimono has brought people together through the shared experience of wearing it. Groups like Edo-Chōyūkai have existed for well over a century, creating community across generations, lineages, and the work of many Horishi.

Over the years, I have become the common connection between many of the people I tattoo. If pictured as a wheel, I have been the hub, with my clients connected to me like spokes. Until this shoot, many had never met.

I hope this gathering is a step toward expanding those connections beyond me and my private studio, allowing a community of people with Horimono to develop here in Atlanta, outside of the internet.

The purpose was to document these works and recognize the people committed to wearing them. I came away realizing that bringing them together may have been just as important.

I’m grateful to everyone who took part and hope to do it again in the future.

More to come.
