Where Old Meets New -Bringing Japanese Tradition into everyday life through textile like Tenugui & Noren, craftsmanship, and hands-on experience.

THE SHOKUNIN COLLECTION - KUMOI ZOME
.
I am fortunated to working with amazing artists & craftspeople for hand-dye projects over decades, and learning hand-dye process from craftspeople in their dye house. I visited Takashi @takashi_sekizawa a Chusen Artist during my learning trip in Japan last month. We have been working for many exciting Tenugui projects together.
.
Kumoi-zome also called Tsutsu-zome is a type of Shibori tie dye technique, using a special tube and dye tenugui cloth by hands. Takashi made a tsutsu-zome tube himself. Loosely folding tenugui cloth and push in to the tube, and pour the dye into it. You never know how the cloth will come out, it'll be a totally one-of-a-kind art piece Tenugui. I learned the dye process of Kumoi zome during my trip by Takashi.
.
We made a few Tenugui projects together with Kumoi-zome x Chusen hand-dye before; such as our @tenuguiart original Zen Garden Tenugui, @thirdsbk Rule of Thirds the 4th edition Original Tenugui, and @hakatatonton Original Tenugui, now I know how these tenugui were born 😊
Thank you Takashi for give me a great lesson during my stay.
.

This past June, I brought together 14 of my clients, each representing years of commitment to Horimono with the work we’ve created together.

Some began with a sleeve and progressed into a bodysuit. Others approached their bodysuit from a full-body-outline before shading & color. While others completed the backpiece with no current goal to continue. Each tattoo was built to fit that person physically, compositionally, and spiritually.

Seeing these works together reveals something difficult to communicate through a single tattoo: Horimono is not simply a large tattoo, it’s a concise suit of talismans and ornaments, intended to become part of the person wearing it.

The shoot was a success, but what stayed with me most was something I hadn’t anticipated.

I watched people who had never met share stories and relate through something they had spent years investing themselves in. It made me realize there is an aspect of Horimono I have probably neglected: community.

I don’t mean “community” only in its modern, internet-era interpretation. Historically, Horimono has brought people together through the shared experience of wearing it. Groups like Edo-Chōyūkai have existed for well over a century, creating community across generations, lineages, and the work of many Horishi.

Over the years, I have become the common connection between many of the people I tattoo. If pictured as a wheel, I have been the hub, with my clients connected to me like spokes. Until this shoot, many had never met.

I hope this gathering is a step toward expanding those connections beyond me and my private studio, allowing a community of people with Horimono to develop here in Atlanta, outside of the internet.

The purpose was to document these works and recognize the people committed to wearing them. I came away realizing that bringing them together may have been just as important.

I’m grateful to everyone who took part and hope to do it again in the future.

More to come.

✨ Custom Noren for Tokyo Drift 555 – Eldred, New York ✨
.
It was such an honor to create these beautiful custom noren for Tokyo Drift 555, from the very first design sketch to the final installations.

Each noren was handcrafted in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, in collaboration with one of our longtime partner hand-dyeing factories, where traditional craftsmanship has been passed down for 120-years. Every piece is made with care, one by one.

We chose the beautiful Suō Red (蘇芳) together with Christy, the owner of Tokyo Drift 555 & Yopparai, to complement their unique interior, and it turned out to be the perfect choice.

The entire space reflects the bold creativity and vision of Gaku, the owner of Tokyo Drift 555 & Yopparai. If you've visited Yopparai, you'll recognize his signature style—thoughtful, playful, and full of unexpected details. Gaku is not only a talented business owner but also an incredible creator whose ideas always inspire me. It has been such a pleasure to bring one of his visions to life through these custom noren.

Tokyo Drift 555 has now soft-opened, and they're already fully booked this week—what an amazing start! If you're planning a visit, be sure to check their opening schedule and make a reservation. Their omakase experience promises exceptional food and plenty of surprises at the counter.

Congratulations to Gaku & Christy, and the entire Tokyo Drift 555 team! Thank you for trusting us to create your custom noren. Wishing you every success—we can't wait to visit!

🦈 Behind the Story of the Tokyo Drift 555 Tairyo-bata 「祝いの印」 (iwai no shirushi), a symbol of celebration and good fortune 🙏🫶🙏
.
This custom Tairyo-bata was handcrafted by Kamezaki Senko in Ichiki-Kushikino, Kagoshima—a historic fishing town where the tradition of making Tairyo-bata has been preserved since 1869.

Each flag is hand brush-dyed by master artisan Masahiro Kamezaki, president of Kamezaki dyehouse, carrying forward generations of Japanese craftsmanship and heritage.

Every element of the design tells a story:

🌅 The rising sun and blue waves welcome a new beginning.

🐦 Five flying Chidori (plovers) symbolize good fortune and victory.

🐟 A Maguro (bluefin tuna) opens its mouth with "あ" (A), while a Tai (sea bream) closes its mouth with "ん" (Un). Together they represent 阿吽 (A-Un)—a Japanese expression for two people who understand each other perfectly without words, a fitting symbol for Gaku & Christy's partnership.

Traditional Tairyo-bata tassels frame the banner, completing the design with authentic details inspired by Japan's fishing heritage.

The flag was presented in traditional Noshi packaging, carrying the blessings 航海安全 (Safe Voyages) and 祈願大漁 (Prayers for a Bountiful Catch)—timeless wishes for safety, prosperity, and lasting success for many years to come. 🙏❤️🙏

From Kagoshima, Japan, to Eldred, New York, this Tairyo-bata traveled across the world before being carefully installed at the entrance of Tokyo Drift 555.

Congratulations to Gaku & Christy on this exciting new chapter. May the Tokyo Drift 555 Tairyo-bata proudly fly as a symbol of celebration, good fortune, prosperity, and lasting success

for many years to come. ✨

🦈🦈🦈 We create custom Tairyo-bata from design to traditional handcrafted production.

Twelve years ago I started tattooing, and I never could have imagined that it would lead to something like this.

For my 12th anniversary of tattooing, I wanted to do something to document not only the tattoos themselves, but the people behind them. The relationships, the trust, the years of commitment, and the shared belief that something meaningful is worth building consistently over time.

Fourteen of my incredible clients came together for this shoot, many of whom have worked on their bodysuits for years, enduring long sessions and dedicating themselves to a process that is increasingly rare in the modern world. Getting to see everyone together in one room was a reminder of what makes Horimono so special to me, and it made me reflect more deeply on my own process and the social aspect of Horimono that’s largely missing from modern “irezumi” tattooing in the West.

Seeing everyone together was an incredibly powerful and motivating experience for all involved. I am deeply grateful to every person who participated. Each of you trusted my vision, committed yourselves to the process, and invested years of patience and dedication to reach this point.

Thank you to @BrayvHouse and @DiwangValdez for helping bring this vision to life.

Fundoshi provided by @TenuguiArt, thank you, Ruri-san.

Here’s to the next 12 years. 🍻
