The last two years have felt like stolen time for me and my boy, Willie T Nelson Hadley; I knew I was getting away with something big to have him as long as I did, specifically as healthy and happy as he has been after what were some nasty brawls with death’s door. And now I’m doing the time for it.

Willie was my “second dog”, my dog I pre-emptively adopted to cushion the heartbreak when previous Good Boy Xander passed. I swore I could never love him as much as I had loved Xander, and Willie made it his life’s work to prove me right — I could only love him differently and just as enormously.

Willie was the dog that made people smile when he walked by them as he traveled the country with me. He comforted a man on the way to say goodbye to his mother at the airport, treated my nieces like a canine cousin, he made my mom understand what it meant to have a fur grandchild. He was the envy of dog-owning friends, “I just want a dog like Willie”, they’d say. Me too.

Willie was malleable, the only constant he needed was me and any foodish stuff he could scavenge. He survived a bag of granola with raisins, countless easter chocolates, the deed to my house, a few 20s, a large check from the Sundance Institute, a roll of dog poop bags that needed to be picked up by another roll of dog poop bags. He once ate 16 times the human dose of CBD gummies and had a really great afternoon. Last year, when @geraldplayspickle and I went to Columbus for the holidays with Willie, he was acting very slow and old for the whole week we were there before he released basically a half of a fleece blanket from Los Angeles onto the floor that had been hanging out in his tummy. Maybe he didn’t know how to pack a security blanket properly which makes little sense since he was always traveling packed as mine.

Willie was popular enough to warrant a full birthday celebration this year because he made friends everywhere — every office, trip with friends, grocery store (except the Los Feliz Costco). I am eternally grateful for everyone who recognized his magic over his 15.5 years with me. I was never going to be able to steal enough time, but it doesn’t mean Willie and I didn’t try real hard.
