The Division of Student Affairs, the Department of Art History & Archaeology, and Foundry are pleased to announce a Call for Proposals for a new mural on our campus. The work will be installed on the second floor of the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Building, located at 7999 Regents Drive (College Park, MD). The commissioned work will feature in the 2027 edition of NextNOW Fest, organized annually by the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. We invite submissions that express the vision, mission, and values of the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) as described in Forward Together, DSA’s Strategic Plan. We are particularly interested in inspirational, colorful designs that encapsulate the diverse experiences and trajectories of students outside of the classroom and across their UMD careers. Preference will be given to artists who have a personal connection to UMD. Submissions should be new and original works and should be painted directly onto the wall. Artists may incorporate additional space along the hallway, but the mural is primarily intended for a slightly recessed portion of a wall on the second-floor hallway of the Mitchell Building (approximately 164 × 82.5 inches; photos and video of the space are available on the submission form). A two-day international conference at UMD and in Baltimore will examine how American museums can better engage Muslim and diasporic communities in interpreting Islamic art. Beginning tomorrow, “From the Balkans to Bengal in Baltimore” will bring together curators and other museum professionals, scholars and artists to consider questions ranging from how museums classify objects and write labels to whose knowledge and experiences shape the stories told in galleries. Speakers will represent institutions including the Museum for Islamic Art in Berlin, the New York Public Library, the MSU Broad Art Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum at the University of Cambridge. An accompanying exhibition at the University of Maryland Art Gallery, called “LANDLINE,” features contemporary Muslim artists with connections to Baltimore, Maryland and UMD. Open through December 4, it is the first exhibition dedicated solely to Islamic art at UMD. For conferencegoers, the exhibition helps connect historical works created outside the United States with contemporary art by Muslim artists in the region, organizers say. America’s history is built from stories like Lakeland’s. A new exhibition at the College Park Aviation Museum, “Reclaiming Our Space: The Story of Lakeland,” uses interactive digital streetscapes to bring visitors into the history of a thriving Black community near Lake Artemesia that was largely displaced during urban renewal in the 20th century. “This is going to allow Lakelanders ... to see something they haven’t seen for many years, and show their children and grandchildren,” says Quint Gregory, director of the Michelle Smith Collaboratory for Visual Culture. Graduate students in Gregory’s class on collaborative curation worked with Lakeland residents and community partners on the project. The exhibition was supported in part by the Maryland 250 Commission, recognizing Marylanders’ contributions to U.S. history during its milestone anniversary. Link in profile.
