Ro2 Art Gallery and Wheeler Bros Studios are pleased to present the 16th installation of Ulterior Motifs. The renowned group exhibition was first conceived in 1999 by Jeffrey and Bryan Wheeler as a celebratory exhibition of Lubbock art and music featuring opening ceremonies, belly-dancers, Texas Tech cheerleaders, wandering musicians and magicians, Elvis impersonators, and other Dada-esque performances, both planned and spontaneous. It then quickly grew into a much-anticipated annual event that drew huge crowds and art-world reviews and featured the works of Texas art legends, such as Ed and Nancy Kienholz, James Surls, The Art Guys, Terry and Jo Harvey Allen, Luis Jimenez, Robert Rauschenberg, Trenton Doyle Hancock and many more. And while the show began in and grew out of Lubbock, some of the most prominent museums, galleries, and alt-spaces around the state have since hosted a version of U.M. This iteration is the first since James Surls hosted UM15 at his legendary studio in Splendora, Texas in 2016. The artists represented in Ulterior Motifs #16 work in a variety of media and styles, but each contends with themes that address the contemporary Texas scene. And for the first time, this latest installation of U.M. will feature collaborations between the Wheeler brothers and each of the other participating artists. These drawings, paintings, and sculptures were handed off, back-and-forth between the artists over the last several months, each contributing a little at a time until they were completed. The improvisational visual conversations that result are delightful and unpredictable and will be seen here for the first time anywhere. The artists include: Franklin Ackerley, Bale Creek Allen, Ricky Armendariz, Gillian Bradshaw-Smith, Susan Budge, Steve Cruz, Jad Fair, Janice Freeman, Terry Hays, Ana Hernandez-Burwell, Carlos Hernandez, Daniel Johnston, Jack Massing, Erica Stephens, and Carrol Swenson-Roberts.

✨ Terry Hays – Selective Memory: The Sanctuary Acrylic on Sintra, 95 x 95 in. We’re starting REVIVAL with a work that deals directly with aftermath. In 2015, Terry Hays watched video of artifacts being destroyed at the Mosul Museum. The Sanctuary came later—built slowly, with precision. Not to recreate what was lost, but to ask what it means to hold memory in form. That’s where the show begins. Not with reinvention, but with recognition. What still holds. What demands to be seen again. What survives, not through preservation, but through attention. Opens Saturday, February 7 from 7-10pm Ro2 Art · Tin District, Dallas #Ro2REVIVAL #ro2art #terryhays

✨Final Week to View Our Current Exhibitions✨ On view through April 5, 2025 at Ro2 Art 2606 Bataan St., Dallas, TX 75212 • Terry Hays: A Safe Place • Douglas Darracott: American Dream • Christopher Cascio: Ketamine Cave Dreams This trio of exhibitions navigates the intertwined themes of home, identity, and healing, each through a distinct visual vernacular, all rendered in opaque acrylic paint. Terry Hays offers an intimate reflection on his identity as the son of a small-town Texas minister and painter. His works echo the aesthetics of home décor and folk traditions, crafting a quiet ode to comfort and family. His installations evoke an almost spiritual sincerity, rooted in artistic intention and traditions from global cultures 💭 Douglas Darracott channels a painterly spirit reminiscent of Van Gogh, exploring suburban American architecture across class and geography. Each 16 x 20 work is hung in a quilt-like grid, nod to early American craft traditions, idealizing imagery that is both deeply personal and culturally fraught. 🏡 Christopher Cascio delves into altered states of consciousness, drawing from his experiences with ketamine therapy to treat clinical depression. Caves become metaphors for portals, both spiritual and psychological, with the idea of “home” flickering at the edge. Using AI-generated images as distorted source material, Cascio’s vivid, illustrative linework builds an expressive language of transformation in a tightly controlled, radiant palette. 🔵🟡⚫️ Don’t miss this compelling exploration of place, memory, and the visual forms we use to heal. — #Ro2Art #ChristopherCascio #DouglasDarracott #TerryHays

These three exhibitions at Ro2 Art feel like they were meant to be experienced together. Douglas Darracott, Terry Hays, and Chris Cascio each explore space in ways that are both deeply personal and universally resonant—whether through the homes we inhabit, the memories embedded in materials, or the portals that lead us beyond the familiar. Darracott’s paintings reflect on home and identity, capturing houses across the U.S. as both intimate spaces and cultural markers. Hays’ intricately constructed surfaces fuse pattern, texture, and history, transforming familiar forms into something entirely new. Cascio’s luminous portals and staircases suggest movement—both physical and psychological—evoking transformation and the unknown. Individually, each exhibition stands on its own, but together, they create a striking dialogue about how we shape, experience, and move through the world. Now that the shows are fully installed, I’m seeing even more connections between them, and I can’t wait for others to experience them. Stop by this week (Tues-Sat, 12-5) for a preview, and join us for the opening on Saturday, March 8, 7-10 PM, when all three artists will be in attendance—along with a special intermedia collaboration by Taylor Cleveland, on view for one night only.
