We 💙 our Alumni!!!

MBC Alumni from Class of 2009 to 2026 joined current students in practicum class today 🙌 They shared their current roles, their work journeys and invaluable advice 👏

These 10 alumni have roles from NGOs, state government, federal government, post-graduate fellowships and even at our own @scripps_ocean 🤯

Thank you so much alumni for the work you do in the world and your ongoing support of MBC students 🎉🎉🎉

✨️ MBC goes to California Ocean Day 🙌✈️

Students traveled to Sacramento and spent the day lobbying with advocacy groups and policymakers to support ocean conservation policies in the state capitol 🌊✊️

Along they way they connected with alumni, leaders they met last summer, and met lots of incredible people with a shared commitment to safe, accessible coasts and oceans in the state of California 🎉🎉🎉

✨️Final Student Takeover post from @michael_demarte ✨️

One of the best parts of this journey has been the people.

Graduate school is more than classes and deadlines — it’s shared experiences, new challenges, unforgettable adventures, and friendships built along the way. From time on the water to earning certifications, celebrating wins, and making memories with an incredible cohort, these moments have been just as meaningful as anything learned in the classroom.

Grateful for the laughs, the support, and the reminder that the journey is always better when shared with good people.

Feeling so blessed to have had the amazing opportunity to travel to Baja de Los Angeles to swim with whale sharks and sea lions and learn about the ecosystems in the area. I met the most wonderful and supportive people, ate fantastic foods, and am walking away with memories that I’ll carry forever. Unfortunately the videos don’t even capture half of the beauty of these marvelous creatures due to my less than professional GoPro skills and the instagram video quality. Thank you so much to all those who helped to make this experience so magical.

✨️📽 End of Summer Films 📽✨️

📣 The Race to the Bottom 📣

The deep sea is the largest environment on Earth, home to diverse life, fragile ecosystems, and interconnected processes vital to ocean health, and it is closer to our lives than we think. Deep-sea mining could not only disrupt marine environments but also worsen the climate crisis – raising the question: is it worth the cost?

Another amazing research adventure out on the RV Robert Gordon Sproul ☑️🛥️💦

This weekend the MBC students got their feet (literally) wet getting to experience life aboard a marine research vessel, including learning how to deploy a plankton tow and otter trawl, sort, identify, and collect samples from a variety of depths, and operate inside the onboard laboratory 🔬

Besides getting to know the awesome crew aboard the Sproul, Chief Scientist for Saturday @museumscientist and Sunday @benfrableoffishial, as well as students from labs of @drverm @arciladahiana @dicknorrisforamking, they also got to meet all sorts of vibrant marine life coming depths as deep as 775m 🕳️

… now that we’re good and salty, who’s ready for Governance Week!?

✨️Thats a wrap on Biodiversity Week 🧬🎉
From the roots of the Tree of life to the drifting dramas of the pelagic zone, this week was a full-on taxonomic tour de force 🙌

Feeling fully classified, slightly specialties and evolutionarily enlightened 👏👏👏

Thanks to all the organisms who made it unforgettable.

Ecology Week is next 🌱🎉

Biodiversity Week is branching out in full bloom! 🌱

The MBC Summer Course is sequencing all things life—from the Tree of Life to genetic code, culture’s phenotype to deep-sea phylogeny, poles to pelagics, and conservation’s ethical genome 👏👏👏

No biodiversity celebration would be complete without a specimen-ally awesome tour of the @scripps_ocean collections 🧬🎉

Get ready for more labs, gene-ius discoveries, and plenty of cell-ebrating learning ahead!
