PROGRESSIVE PERMANENCE features works by four of our collaborators: Carsten in der Elst, Lewis Kemmenoe, LS GOMMA, and Tessa Silva, exhibited alongside historical textile designs from Anni Albers, Gary Hume, Gunta Stölzl, Louise Bourgeois, and Romeo Gigli. Conceived as a curatorial exercise, Max Radford Gallery has selected works from the Christopher Farr archive and paired them with pieces from our own collection—works that have been exhibited internationally but may not have yet seen the light of day in our home city. In the never-ending search for the new, contemporary art and design too often receive just one “unveiling” before stepping out of the limelight. As a platform, we are committed to continually promoting the creatives we work with. We believe these works will be the masterpieces of the future and, much like the design classics of the 20th century, they deserve to be visited and revisited to fully appreciate their beauty.

So so very excited to announce KIND HAM AND DIFFERENT COLOURS, a group show I am co-curating with the excellent @iskalupton . This one’s been a while in the making, but isn’t she beautiful. Taking its title from Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons, KIND HAM AND DIFFERENT COLOURS seeks to do to food what Stein did to language: expand and disrupt its given meaning. The exhibition brings together artists working with paint, clay, in sculpture and moving image, to ask what happens if we surpass the sense in food, sense being both a system of logic and bodily perception. Stein was renowned for her love of food and gardening and for her “beefsteak laugh” but food — consuming it, sharing in it, writing about it — was also an opportunity to make a theatrical and political turn out of domesticity and hospitality, while abstracting the expectations of gender. And as such, KIND HAM AND DIFFERENT COLOURS gathers work that is over-boiled, half-cooked, sticky, visceral, viscose, frosted, glazed, sugar-pasted, fried and simmered. Come through on 24th September @4cose for mortadella, punt-e-mes, readings and performances and brilliant works.
