THANKS SO MUCH to everyone who visited @maxradfordgallery ‘s room at @collectartfair last week to see the Smock Chair in person! Special TY to Max for curating such a delicious selection of pieces, what a pleasure showing next to so many beautiful works (I better own some one day).
On to more stitching and sourcing new fabric for Spring. Get in touch to discuss bespoke commissions or to arrange a studio visit in SE London, the weather is nicer and my doors are open.

The making of the latest piece in the Smock collection, Fragments Bench. Made from the last of a beautiful thick buttery cream cotton roll found in a deadstock warehouse, under deep black. Strips of offcuts were layered and stitched onto the surface - pink and red, delicious, forever favourites. 🌶️🦩

The Crafted Home: the wobbly world of designer Tessa Silva

This film is the first in a new series we’re calling The Crafted Home. Craft is something we’ve wanted to explore for some time, but it has taken us a while to work out how to do so. Naturally, we wanted to focus on the home, and so the search began for the UK’s handmade homemakers: the thatchers, the stonemasons and historic paint specialists that expertly keep our heritage buildings watertight and upright. But before long, our heads were turned by those who craft the objects that we carry with us from home to home – pieces such as Tessa Silva’s beautifully hand-smocked furniture ....

Here, we follow Tessa’s daily journey from her flat to her studio in south east London, via the local Brazilian café. At work in her studio, she draws on a the expertise of her forbears to craft the “bulbous, asymmetrical, wobbly” pieces that define her unique practice.

So pleased to have been awarded some beautiful flowers and a special mention at the @houseandgardenuk Craft Prize this week for my Smock Lounge Chair.

The lovely @tf_chan said this about my piece and I’m into it: “It lures you in with its delicious, Viennetta like creases and then stuns you with the realisation that such a striking piece could be made from material headed for landfill“.

Thanks to the judges and everyone involved, and especially to my fellow shortlisted artists and makers - keep arting and making.
