Negative Recon

We wanted a mission, and for our sins, they gave us one.

Before I left Australia, a group of friends and I decided on a last big trail walk. We returned to Lamington, which is where I had organised a small first meet many years ago, and one of its 17km tracks. Inspired by one of my favourite films, Apocalypse Now, to make things fun, I decided we should all have on our various vintage military surplus pieces and make a creative project of it. All armed with film cameras loaded with Ilford XP2 400 black and white stock, we did our best Dennis Hopper impersonations and let loose. The result of all day is Negative Recon, a compilation of everyone’s best shots.

With the increased interest in analog film photography from my audience in DMs recently, I thought I’d share a few of the shots from Negative Recon here. A single image can only communicate so much and as still pictures become more and more frustrated in their ability to grab an audience's attention, the photo book has re-emerged as a means of photographers to encourage engagement with their work. I’ve always believed in freedom of information, so I will put a link to the digital 74 page photobook in my story, downloadable as a high resolution PDF.

There are a lot of great landscape and portrait shots in this book, some taken with just a point and shoot camera. The full shot in the book of slide 5, taken by @tesselvte remains my favourite of the set. It reaffirmed my belief that gear doesn’t account for very much, especially with film photography.

It has been great connecting with so many people both online and off over the years with this hobby. And I do hope others can find motivation and support in expanding their photography socially. Here’s to many more projects and networks in store for us next year.

Ektar 100 and Fuji Pro 400H on my Bronica SQ-Ai

The first church shot is my favourite shot I've taken with this camera so far. I've always enjoyed seeing the contrast between modern and traditional architecture with Brisbane having some beautiful and impressive churches right in the CBD.

I'm finding that Ektar 100 suits the extreme light we get in Queensland most days and the grain is very fine on it, though the cheaper and apparently soon to be discontinued Fuji Pro 400H has a very nice character to it as well. Thanks @lazaruslab for the great development and scans.

Rainforest Panoramas

I was inspired by Gyakusou mashups from some of their older editorials that blended action, close up and scenic shots into a single image. Most of these are simply crops but I've included two shots at the end which were stitched together from multiple images to make a higher resolution panorama.

The light was extremely challenging that day and we had to turn back just as we got deep enough down beneath the canopy. I'd like to return soon to try shots completely in the shade. Thanks @tesselvte for the portrait of me and @cusaqqasuc who contributed the fourth shot's top image.

Binna Burra: Where the beech tree grows.

Binna Burra is a national park that is home to the northern most communities of Antarctic beech trees. These trees can be found in Australia from the time when it was joined with Antarctica as part of Gondwana, a super continent that broke apart some 180 million years ago.

@cusaqqasuc, @tesselvte and I spent last weekend hiking one of the longer 17 km trails. Despite being winter here it still gets quite warm during the day and light weight, breathable performance wear made the trek more comfortable. @tesselvte took his Veilance Rhomb jacket out, a piece he reviewed for shellzine.net, finding it more suitable as a trail running jacket than as a urban shell. He's paired it with other running gear from Lululemon Lab and Arc’teryx. I'm in all Nike Run and Yoga gear with my ACG Mowabbs. Together, we took a lot of photos and I've been going through them over the last few days. In a day or two I'll share a few collages of panoramic shots of the landscape and some of the trail running activities.

I'm always appreciative of being able to live in such a beautiful part of the world and having good friends to enjoy exploring it with.
