Deep in the hills of Arashiyama, often overlooked lays Otagi Nenbutsu-ji. Founded in the 8th century, its now famous for its 1,200 unique stone carvings each hand carved with its own expression. While the place is deeply spiritual I couldn’t shake an eerie feeling as if I was being watched throughout my visit. taken in Otagi Nenbutsu-ji by @tesselvte

Abandoned and overgrown, these structures line the canals of Otaru, Japan. Built in the 1920s during the city’s industrial expansion, now untouched due to their utilitarian design, exposed concrete, and elements of Japanese Brutalism. Captured on a Canon Autoboy 135 on Ektar 100 film. taken in Otaru Canal, Hokkaido, Japan by @tesselvte

Shanghai : Part 4 - High Speed Rail

Boasting the world’s largest electrified rail network, travelling inter-city in China on high speed trains is a must. The architecture and scale of these stations was truly breathtaking and worth seeing all on their own.

One station stood out was Nanjing South Station which incorporated traditional Chinese designs normally seen in Temples but with modern day materials and techniques.

Shanghai : Part 3 - Qibao

One afternoon we decided to go to Qibao, a historical area renowned for its well-preserved canals and architecture that dates back over a thousand years. Exploring this area was like stepping back in time, an oasis of calm amid the urban chaos. It’s narrow walkways created a perfect funnel of street life, with vendors selling everything from silk fans to dumplings.

As night falls the place becomes alive with red lanterns decorating the pagodas and teahouses creating a unique ambiance that further brings out the charm of the place

Shanghai : Part 2 - Metro City

Kicked off this trip at Metro City, Shanghai — a salmon-toned, retro-futuristic mall crowned with a glowing globe that predates the famous Vegas Sphere.

This place is an opportunist’s dream for people watching , car watching and street photography while experiencing the 8 lane peak hour traffic of the city below.

Shanghai : Part 1 — Architecture

A spontaneous visit to reconnect with an old friend turned into a whirlwind photo adventure through a city where old-world charm meets sci-fi. Armed with just two 35mm film cameras (Contax T & Canon Autoboy Jet), I shot over 10 rolls of film — all bought, developed, and scanned locally.

This series documents and captures the rich textures of Shanghai’s architecture and vibrant street life with exerpts and experiences of my short time there.

Article now live on Shellzine, link in bio.
