I have finished my gloves started in a workshop on Thursday with @paperjennifer @textile_explorers via Zoom. We had a really inspiring and productive day and I am quite pleased with my pair of gloves. With extra tips I picked up during the workshop I’m sure I will be making more of these.

I really enjoyed a @textile_explorers Zoom workshop on Saturday with @casholmestextiles .
We were experimenting with kneading different types of paper to soften them ready for stitch, I used pages from an old book, maps, a heavy weight lining paper and handmade paper . Then we made a small collage with pieces of fabric, rust dyed silk and finally we began to stitch.
This is still a “work in progress” and strangely for me one with no prior plan, just letting the materials tell me what should come next…..I’m enjoying the winter sun peaking through the trees……a really lovely day.

I was lucky thanks to @textile_explorers to participate in a Zoom workshop with @casholmestextiles last week. We had an enjoyable day altering paper and creating small collage samples. As usual everyone produced something different from the same starting point so the results were very inspiring. We had enjoyed a talk the previous evening where Cas told us about her travels and her work so this provided some good background to the workshop. Now I need to finish the remainder of my remaining samples.

Foxgloves complete………

Finally this week the foxgloves in a range of sizes have been completed, along with the forget-me-nots while branching oxeye-daisy like flowers are being completed today. So then it will be decision time on the scale of the new work. I know I want to create a large piece in landscape format but have to give considerable consideration to the final framing size, hanging weight and delivery needs. I frame all my work under glass so anything reaching a meter wide will become very heavy and unmanageable for lots of galleries to hang on their systems. Plus as I finely hand-stitch all the elements in place it can be difficult to manipulate a large work for stitching in the central areas of the piece. I can’t use an embroidery frame as this impedes many of the stitches I use.
I could opt for not putting work under glass as I know many textile folk do but for me I consider this wrong for many so many reasons with textile pieces. Yes a very textural and maybe mixed-media textile pieces need other finishing and display considerations. But often I see badly mounted and unglazed framed 2D textiles for sale which are just moth, dust, sun and touch traps and won’t last beyond a couple of years on a wall. People need to think why most conserved textiles are under glass or are in near dark lighting with huge sign ‘DON”T TOUCH’ neat them. The touch wear is a really serious issue as textile folk naturally want to touch anything tactile (it’s in the DNA) but the acid in a finger that touches can destroy a work. I know not everyone agrees with me about putting work under glass and I have even had a complaint from a visitor to an exhibition that they ‘wanted to closely document my work to use as reference for their own work and the glass interfered with the photographing!!!’ But for me it’s the only way I want o present and maintain my work.

So with decisions to make its back to the studio for a week before Christmas finally engulfs as I can hear the hoho’s in the distance.

Marking Time: Translating the pattern book archive at Macclesfield Silk Museum - A Stitch & Mixed Media Exhibition by Loose Threads.

4th July - 30th August 2025 - Corridor Gallery

Loose Threads is made up of four friends from textile / art backgrounds who enjoy researching and developing ideas. We share an enthusiasm for creativity whilst using textiles as our principle means of artistic expression. We regularly produce exhibition work with other groups and have enjoyed the opportunity to study and work with some of the pattern books from the extensive archive.

We each have three pieces of work which are hung on the downstairs corridor.

Upstairs there is a larger exhibition titled ‘A Small Space’

If you've not visited the Silk Museum before it’s well worth a visit and you might want to book on a tour of Paradise Mill.

Homeward bound.

Exhausted. A super time in Cheshire with the rather wonderful textile explorers. Always amazed at the diverse response to my workshops. So many talented people.

I love my job.

Nothing is better than cloth and stitch and the people who share that passion.
