Today we welcomed a group of Fashion and Photography BTEC students from @sandwell.college as part of their creative study trip to Cornwall. The group visited @falmouthuni for a workshop & tour of FTI facilities, working with staff from @falmouth_fashiondesign & @textiledesignfalmouth Students were tasked with creating yarn wrappings to inspire colour palettes using photographs from their trip to the Eden Project & St.Ives. We were really impressed by their focus & engagement, and with their fantastic creative response, some of which you can see here. Had a wonderful day on Monday with the staff of Launceston Museum creating samplers with a contemporary twist – printing, appliqué and stitch for a Workshop entitled “a guiding hand” inspired by their plain work sampler collection which features three young makers Ethel Higman Beatrice Ellacott Harriet Pike Who all made samplers during the last century showing their skills as pupils making cuffs, collars, buttonholes, pleats, darts and mending all by hand More sampler and teacher adventures to come. One of the new artist books I made during my residency at St Ives Museum last week. It’s called “I need to remember everything“. The book is inspired by the story of Jane Morley, who stitched her sampler in 1859 when she was only 13 years old. Jane came from Gwinear in Cornwall and was part of a mining family. After her father died, Jayne, her mother, and brothers made the extraordinary decision to leave the county and to travel to Australia as part of the gold rush, eventually setting at Chinaman’s Flats in Victoria. There is so much more to uncover about Jane and her family, but sadly her story ends much too soon. Jane died in her late 20s, and her mother and brothers also died within a short period of time. Even Jane’s sampler is slowly disappearing. The stitches are fading and the fabric is becoming fragile. I find myself thinking about this alongside her story, how about the object and the life of this young woman who made it can become difficult to see. The sampler is part of a display in a Cornish kitchen scene at the Museum, and this became the starting point for my artist book. I began thinking about the Victorian mantelpiece, covered with the small, beautiful and familiar objects that made a house feel like Home. I imagine Jane preparing to leave Cornwall, gathering up those precious things she wanted to remember. Perhaps the Book becomes a place to hold everything she is leaving behind – her home, her extended family and friends, Cornwall and the life she knew, because she may have believed she would never return. At the same time, I am using the book itself to question what a book can be: What is a spine? What is a cover? What are the pages? What is the binding? For these series, I am playing with these familiar parts of a book and asking him what happens when they begin to change, disappear or take on a different role. The physical form of the book becomes part of the research, along with a story it carries. “I need to remember everything” is one of a series of four artist books exploring speculation as part of my Phd research with Falmouth university.
