S1 ⭕️ CREATIVE RESEARCH 🖌️

We’ve recently updated our S1 teaching with a new Creative Research module.

With a greater focus on exploring visual research skills, and by challenging and expanding their approach to contextual research, students will develop confidence in core methods & practices that underpin textile design.

We’re off to a great start with the Limited Colour & Still Life workshop, the group engagement and output was fantastic!

Today we welcomed a group of Fashion and Photography BTEC students from @sandwell.college as part of their creative study trip to Cornwall.
The group visited @falmouthuni for a workshop & tour of FTI facilities, working with staff from @falmouth_fashiondesign & @textiledesignfalmouth

Students were tasked with creating yarn wrappings to inspire colour palettes using photographs from their trip to the Eden Project & St.Ives.
We were really impressed by their focus & engagement, and with their fantastic creative response, some of which you can see here.

Thank you to the staff and students @sandwellfashion - it was a pleasure to meet you, come again soon!

OBJECT BASED RESEARCH > ARCHIVE

We’ve been playing detectives in the Penryn campus archives to kick start the S3 Futures module & expand research skills.
A mindful session with a sense of reverence and an antidote to online algorithms- it’s amazing what you can find!

Thanks to Carole & Ro, the super team @fxuniarchives for selecting out a range of inspiring resources & facilitating the session.

SEPTEMBER RESET> First Years straight to work in our dye garden 🌱

Based in our beautiful walled garden on the Penryn campus & a short walk from the Design Centre, our natural dye garden is unique.

Timetabled gardening sessions support wellbeing, community building & teamwork.

Students are invested in the seasonal cycle; sowing, tending, harvesting and processing the plants before using the crops in the dye lab & workshops.

This is one of the great ways we embed sustainable practice into the course 💚

TEX+ 🌟 Prize Winner 🌟

Congratulations to Ruby Bolt for winning the Tex+ Trustee Prize for Sustainable Practice 👏

Ruby moved to Falmouth from Sydney, bringing with her the lived experience of the Australian Outback.
Ruby’s respect & passion for landscape and the environment has led her studio practice throughout the degree. Coupled with a sense of curiosity, innovation and a fresh, contemporary aesthetic, Ruby has created outstanding and eye catching mixed media collections, which totally deserve the industry attention they are gaining. Well done Ruby!
