‘Breaking News: Flooding of the Louvre’

🖼 Tezi Gabunia’s installation makes a statement about our fluctuating perception of environmental disasters as it is seen through the media. Have we lost sensitivity towards climate change due to constant coverage of the terrifying events it causes? This exhibit is a fresh reminder of the imminent challenge we face: the viewer is compelled by the shocking concept of invaluable artwork being destroyed in a venue as iconic as the Louvre, Paris. Gabunia’s unique representation of climate change’s effects forces us to consider the cultural impact (let alone the human impact) of an entirely fictitious yet possible event.

🌊Unfortunately, flooding as a result of climate change has become a reality in Europe. The recent floods in Western Germany and parts of Belgium and the Netherlands have devastated the lives of many: hundreds dead, missing, homeless … Gabunia’s almost apocalyptic vision of the future in artistic terms is much closer than we could have imagined.

🌏Climate change will wreak irreversible damage not only on our lives as human beings, but on our cultural and artistic relics too. Entire art studios, in Stolberg for example, were washed away in recent weeks. By examining these tragedies from the perspective of cultural loss, the need to act becomes ever more tangible.

#LOOPFair2020 – The Selection

We are very happy to announce the first participation of @kornfeldgalerie (Berlin) to LOOP 2020!

The Berlin-based gallery will present the video installation "Breaking News: The Flooding of the Louvre" (2018-2020, 3min 2s) by Tbilisi-based artist Tezi Gabunia (@tezigabunia).

"Within the installation, Gabunia uses a method of 'falsification' in order to reflect upon the contemporary world and trigger a dialogue about hyper-realistic issues in art and the boundaries between fact and fiction. Within the work the viewer is presented by the Louvre, overtaken by natural disaster caused by climate change as one watches the uncannily realistic video footage of water entering the prestigious museum venue"

Flooding of the Louvre
Natural disaster increasingly linked to a climate change has arrived to the museum of Louvre, which responds to the flooding of Paris in 2018. The artwork also respresents the issue of cultural leftover. Recycling is the main value of the process. By destruction of model that was a part of previous project Put Your Head into Gallery, the leftovers are reconstructed and new meanings and possibilities are created.
The flooding of the Louvre Museum speaks about news culture and our fluctuating perception of disasters as it is seen through media. The scale of the disaster is often difficult to assess from news coverage. In the work “Breaking News” flood goes slowly into the room of the Louvre, letting the viewer to gradually watch the destruction of interior. it brings the viewer shochinkly close to what has not happened but easily could have, viewer sees the before and after effect in a highly visualized manner, which is as convincing and threatening, as fake. The artwork presents a scoop, a situation, where the information as a show exceeds terrifying nature of catastrophe and where the real event is abolished. Is the information a new type of reality? Is it possible to cover real events? These issues arise during encounter of two situations - destruction of art artefacts and spectacular feature of this process.
