“Modern Chorus” is officially up in Thacher!

This painting has been my life and soul these past few months. I had never made an oil painting before this, and my genius self thought the best way to go about learning a new medium is to spend 140+ on this absolute unit of a piece.

I want to give special thanks to @taranewland for helping me out every week and supplying me with sweet treats, I appreciate you so much 🫶🏼

I also want to thank the jury for awarding this piece the Thacher Prize For Artistry as well as our department faculty, I’m truly so honored to be recognized. And lastly a big thank you to @thachergalleryusfca and everyone who worked hard to put this show together!

We were honored to produce this display for Stuart McKee for the Queer Subjectivities in History project, now showing at @thatchergalleryusfca These fine art prints are printed on our Cold Press Natural paper for a vibrant, high quality presentation with some texture.

The Queer Subjectivities in History project features a series of free-standing banners that present individuals from history who can be identified as conforming to particular gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender identities. Shown are six of the banners as featured within the University of San Francisco’s Thacher Gallery, as part of the exhibition Wayfinders: The Art + Architecture Faculty Triennial (March 2–April 12, 2026).

In the words of the artist:
“If we consider the prevalence of individuals who possessed an intermediary sex or gender across a variety of cultures, the variations within Western history are so numerous that they can only convince us that an underlying chauvinism has infused the public’s awareness of sexuality in contemporary society. The Queer Subjectivities in History project therefore seeks to “queer,” or to undermine, the notion of public education by situating overt and potentially controversial information pertaining to different global sexualities within prominent public venues, such as the Thacher Gallery setting. In the context of the Faculty Triennial installation, the theme of “Wayfinding” will support a correction in the ways in which sexual subjectivities can be made factual, public, and prominent.”
