Madi Reyes' Orient Mart features a colorful twist on branding, packaging, and advertising. Many of her pieces use familiar logos to draw viewers in while explaining the cultural significance of each reference. Flat Nose, Dark Skin, and Asian Eyes are a few of the boxes in her installation, highlighting how Western beauty standards have scrutinized and criticized physical traits. The piece Tiger Mom combines the packaging of Tiger Balm with the stereotypical title, providing context and the title’s origins.

You can see all these pieces and more at Orient Mart in the Thacher Gallery! by @thachergalleryusfca

FOCUS FRIDAY | Kevin Lopez Pardillo

This Friday, we’re focusing on Kevin Lopez Pardillo and his piece Valley Plaza, a playful recreation of the familiar strip-mall signs found throughout California’s Central Valley and Bay Area. The sign features everyday businesses like a pawn shop, pharmacy, jewelry store, phone repair and accounting services, bringing the visual language of these communities into the gallery.

Inspired by pulgas, plaza strip malls, street vendors and mechanic shops, Pardillo uses these familiar images to explore themes of machismo, vanity, counterfeits, indulgence and labor. What looks like a simple shopping-center directory becomes a closer look at the culture and values reflected in these everyday spaces.

Throwback Thursday | Hispanic Heritage Month Continued!
We’re looking back at Sonia Romero, who was a featured artist at Thacher Gallery in 2025.
A Los Angeles-based artist, Romero describes herself as a “both/and” artist, drawing from her Chicano heritage and Ashkenazi Jewish family history. Her work blends painting and printmaking, often exploring themes of identity, culture, consumption, and lived experience.
In Taken Root, Romero brought together works spanning painting, linocuts, monoprints, collage, and more.
We’re excited to revisit Romero’s work as we continue celebrating Hispanic artists and their contributions to the art world. by @thachergalleryusfca

Take a look at this upcoming Market/Value event!!🤩

This conversation features three artists from Market/Value discussing the roles of design and text in the artworks presented in Market/Value. The conversation will explore the direct, mixed, and subversive messaging in each of their works, the aesthetics of rasquache and creative appropriation, and much more!

Kathryn Kenworth makes work that looks at how ordinary objects and materials can tell stories about social dynamics, personal desires, emotional structures, and systems of value.

Kevin Lopez Pardillo works with mixed-media sculptural installations and airbrush painting, focusing on the rasquache politics of "making do," an ideology that originated within Mexican and Chicano working-class communities.

Madi Reyes is a graphic designer specializing in branding, packaging design, and illustration. Moderator Ian Montgomery teaches in USF’s design program and is a designer working in packaging, editorial, product, and spatial design.

Stop by on October 13th, from 5-6 PM to hear from three of our talented artists!🧡 by @thachergalleryusfca
