Checking off the third natural wonder on my bucket list felt surreal. I’ve dreamed of traveling to Norway to witness the Northern Lights. But life has a way of surprising us, doesn’t it? Not only did I see them from just an hour's drive away from home, Calgary — I was lucky enough to experience something truly extraordinary: a "dancing aurora." Yes, the lights don’t just shimmer—they move, sway, and come alive, painting the sky like a living masterpiece.

It happened in early October, during one of the strongest geomagnetic storms in 25 years. The aurora borealis dazzled the Northern Hemisphere like never before. We found ourselves by a quiet lake, wrapped in the stillness of the night. From 6 PM until 4 AM the next morning, we didn’t move. How could we? The sky seemed to breathe, shifting colors and shapes as if it were performing a timeless dance.

There were moments of vibrant greens swirling into deep purples, then flashes of fiery reds that melted into soft pinks. The stars twinkled like the perfect audience, their reflections glimmering in the calm water below. It felt like being in a dream—one so vivid that even without a camera, every second imprinted itself onto my soul.

The night was peaceful yet electrifying. There were no breaks in this ethereal concert; the aurora kept changing, like dancers slipping backstage only to reappear in new costumes, their energy never faltering. We just sat there, mesmerized, soaking in the silence and the magic.
