📚 REVIEW 📚 The Push by Ashley Audrain

'You know, there's a lot about ourselves that we can't change- it's just the way we're born. But some parts of us are shaped by what we see. And how we're treated by other people. How we're made to feel... I didn't want you learning to be like me. But I don't know how to teach you to be anyone different.'

This book reminded me of We Need to Talk About Kevin, in the way that it examines the debate of nature vs nurture, but it also has a unique mother-daughter bond aspect to it too. It explores the expectations vs realities of motherhood and the ways that one's own relationship with their mother translates down to the next generation.

Blythe's feelings and struggles coming to terms with being a mother to Violet feel so real and relatable. For someone who does not have children, this is certainly a fear: having a baby you simply cannot bond with.

As Violet begins growing from baby to child, Blythe and her husband must make the decision whether to have another child. Will this make things better or worse for their already strained relationship?

Skipping back and forward in time, the story recounts the relationship that Blythe had with her mother growing up and her own mother before. This is cleverly written and neatly intertwines into the chronology of Blythe's story.

I really enjoyed reading this book alongside @bookasaurusbex @rio_reads @jessiscurrentlyreading @katiechasingchapters @thatbrookie @lose_yourself_in_a_book although there were certainly some mixed feelings within the group! It made me question a lot about parenthood and at times felt disturbing and raw, however I personally found this a really intriguing and addictive read, that found me devouring chapter after chapter.

I would certainly recommend this to anyone who is not put off by the subject matter, as I thought it was a great read!

I read this book for the #popsugarreadingchallenge2022 prompt 'quote from favourite author on cover' (one of!), the #diversereadingchallenge2022 prompt 'neuro-divergent main character' (Cecilia) and the #twinflamesreadingchallenge prompt 'mother-daughter'.

🌟 Today is 22/2/22... so make a wish or something...? 🌟

My amazing pal Bron @bronwynandbooks whipped a load of us into shape yesterday by prompting us to have a think about a stack - it's the only true Twosday until August after all!

In honour of this, I did two stacks. The first is two name titles - 22 of them. Tried to avoid the word "The" where possible to narrow down choices.

My second stack is a little achilles heel of mine - seconds in series. Pictured here are some second books in series. I'm embarrassed by how few of them I've read considering I loved the first book in a lot of these!

The Final Girl Support Group

I really really wanted to enjoy this as it sounded exactly like my sort of book. The title and cover also had me hooked.

But I found it such a disappointment that I started to zone out whilst reading and ended up getting lost. It just didn’t keep me interested.

How disappointing for my first book of 2022!
