Do you know who saved Dartmouth's bonfire?

In 2018, when faced with the prospect of losing the permit for the bonfire due to ongoing safety issues, Dartmouth turned to Doug Van Citters '99 Th'03 Th'06 and his engineering expertise for help. "The re-engineered bonfire had to not only be appropriate for students to build while retaining its majesty but also fall in a more predictable fashion, despite nature's unpredictability," he said.

Van Citters built prototype after prototype to arrive at the current model, and since then students have followed his bonfire manual to stack 290 six-inch-by-eight-foot timbers to a height of 28 feet, with an additional eight feet of class numerals at the top, and fill the center with 650 pallets. The result has been bonfires that collapse safely, as predicted.

"Homecoming is bigger than any one experience, and this tradition is an example of building community," says Van Citters. "Also, nobody can beat me at Jenga anymore."

So if you see @thayerSchool Dean Van Citters around campus this weekend, that's our bonfire hero.

You can find this year's schedule at the link in our bio.

Day 1 of the MEM journey has officially begun! 🎓✨ From icebreakers to the marshmallow challenge, breakfast and lunch with the cohort, to getting sorted into West House — orientation day at Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth was one for the books.

Officially a Dartmouth graduate student, kicking off the Master of Engineering Management program with the best cohort I could’ve asked for. Grad school life, new campus, new house, new people — this is the start of something big.

Huge thank you to our amazing MEM Program Co-Directors, Jessica Duda and Jen St. Laurence, for making us feel so welcomed and setting the tone for what’s ahead — and thank you both for being such a special part of this reel 🎥🙏 Grateful for the mentorship already.

New chapter, new city, new people — let’s go 🚀

How might machine learning models help predict glacier melt and movement? 🏔️
Our colleague @MashrekurRahman, Artificial Intelligence Research Data Science Specialist, and Aleah Sommers, Research Scientist at Thayer School of Engineering, are experimenting to find out!

Read the story via 🔗 in bio to learn about Mash and Aleah's shared passion and how applying AI “tools and techniques [can] open up a whole new avenue for us to understand coupled systems that are difficult to observe directly.”
