Engineering sciences major Victoria King '27 is an undergraduate finalist in the 2026 Collegiate Inventors Competition® @InventorsHoF for her invention, Vaskular, a smart, responsive leg compression device designed to help prevent venous thromboembolism.

"Most compression systems apply a predetermined cycle," says King. "Vaskular asks what changes when the patient's physiological response becomes part of the control system."

Voting for the People's Choice Award is open thru Wed, Oct 14, 5:00pm ET. Help Victoria win $2,000 plus a patent acceleration certificate from USPTO!

As King's advisor on the venture and strategy side, Assistant Director of @SEIDDartmouth Kwame Owusu Ansah was an early cheerleader and has written in support of her national competition applications.

"I've advised a lot of ambitious students," he says. "What separates Victoria is that she takes a hard hit, learns from it, and comes back with something better instead of something defended."

Do you know who saved Dartmouth's bonfire?

In 2018, when faced with the prospect of losing the permit for the bonfire due to ongoing safety issues, Dartmouth turned to Doug Van Citters '99 Th'03 Th'06 and his engineering expertise for help. "The re-engineered bonfire had to not only be appropriate for students to build while retaining its majesty but also fall in a more predictable fashion, despite nature's unpredictability," he said.

Van Citters built prototype after prototype to arrive at the current model, and since then students have followed his bonfire manual to stack 290 six-inch-by-eight-foot timbers to a height of 28 feet, with an additional eight feet of class numerals at the top, and fill the center with 650 pallets. The result has been bonfires that collapse safely, as predicted.

"Homecoming is bigger than any one experience, and this tradition is an example of building community," says Van Citters. "Also, nobody can beat me at Jenga anymore."

So if you see @thayerSchool Dean Van Citters around campus this weekend, that's our bonfire hero.

After last year’s drought-induced statewide burn ban, the Dartmouth bonfire will again light up the Green to kick off Homecoming on Friday.

Engineering PhD student Grant Summermatter Th’23 Th’24 volunteered to supervise the build and teach student volunteers about safety protocols and construction practices.

“I’ve been building things all my life,” says Summermatter. “I even worked for a scaffolding company, and this is basically scaffolding. So when my wife saw they were looking for a new student supervisor, she said I should do it. I always listen to her.” taken in Dartmouth College by @thayerschool

We asked employers, “Why hire Dartmouth engineers?” And who would know better than employers who are also alums!

Over 500 students attended the 30th Annual Dartmouth Engineering Career Fair. “This year, Thayer Career Services brought a record-breaking number of employers with 60 companies from different industries across the country,” said Fatmata Sesay ‘27, undergraduate student liaison.

Detecting Life in Icy, Extreme Environments: This past summer, PhD student Paulina Umansky, who works with Professor lan Baker on Antarctic ice microstructure and Professor Jacob Buffo on life detection in planetary ices, lived on the Taku Glacier in Alaska for three weeks as a participant in the @JuneaulcefieldResearchProgram.

“As part of a team led by researchers from the @UniversityofMaine and @UTKnoxville, I conducted a pilot study on ‘Life Detection Across Taku Glacier,’ collecting subglacial and supraglacial samples. In the field, I learned several assays and applied them to analyze these samples, quantifying biosignatures present across the icefield.

The Juneau Icefield serves as an analog for environments across the solar system such as Mars and Europa, giving us a chance to test approaches for detecting life in icy, extreme environments on Earth before applying them to other worlds. I’m incredibly grateful to learn from this dedicated team, and I feel very lucky for the opportunity to explore such unique sites.

My participation was supported by Dartmouth’s Changing Polar Regions Cluster Fieldwork Support Grant and a Guarini Alumni Research Grant.” @DartGrad taken in Taku Glacier by @thayerschool

Hear from Douglas Van Citters ‘99 Th’03 Th’06 about his initial thoughts as the 14th dean of Thayer School of Engineering @DartmouthCollege who assumed his new role on July 1, 2026.

As an undergraduate at Dartmouth, Van Citters rowed for the men’s @Dartmouth_heavies crew team and graduated with a bachelor of arts in engineering sciences and environmental earth sciences.

After graduation, he spent two years working as a hydrogeologist before returning to Dartmouth, where he earned his BE and MS in 2003 and his PhD in engineering sciences in 2006.

Van Citters joined Dartmouth’s engineering faculty in 2007 and holds adjunct appointments in orthopedics @GeiselMed_Dartmouth and in chemistry @DartmouthArtSci.

Van Citters, whose research focuses on biomaterials, biomechanics, tribology, and the design of artificial joints, leads the Dartmouth Biomedical Engineering Center, home to one of the largest collections of retrieved joint implants in the world. taken in Thayer School of Engineering by @thayerschool

Congratulations to Team 5: Aramis Zaiser ‘28, Sam Chin ‘28, Charles Rawlinson ‘28, Adithya Puninchittaya ’28, and Adam Elqanoun ’28 for earning summer term’s Jackson Award for best overall performance in ENGS 21: Introduction to Engineering.

Together they engineered BeatBridge: A modular instrument including an electronic percussion instrument and a DJ table to allow individuals with intellectual disabilities to create music for themselves or in a band. The final prototype incorporated feedback from musical educators from around the US and regular visits to @SparkCommunityCenter and Zack’s Place in the Upper Valley, where the team played music with participants throughout the term.

Often Dartmouth undergraduates’ first engineering class, Intro to Engineering challenges students to develop a novel solution to a real-life problem and team up to design, build, test, and iterate on a prototype. They research patents, create a business plan, and present their project to a professional review board.
