Sultana’s Dream-Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain

Written in 1905,it imagines Ladyland-a world where women run governments, science is used to solve problems rather than create wars, education is taken seriously and men are the ones safely tucked away indoors. The irony is delicious!

My fav part is that the audacity of imagining that women could build a world around reason, science, peace and intellectual freedom at a time when even imagining women outside the domestic sphere was revolutionary.

And yet, I wouldn’t call Ladyland a perfect feminist utopia. At times, the reversal feels almost deliberately vindictive as though Hossain is holding up a mirror and saying,”Now live by the rules you made for us.”But perhaps that is exactly the point.

It is funny, political, idealistic and occasionally simplistic. But beneath its whimsy is a rather uncomfortable truth: society has spent centuries confusing “restriction with protection and exclusion with incapability.”

Perhaps the most radical thing about Hossain’s dream is not that women rule the world but that she could imagine a world worth ruling.
