There Are Ghosts in the House by Akash B

๐Ÿ“š About the story :

The Edment family, who live in New York, find themselves struggling financially after David loses his job. With no other option, they decide to move into Barcaldine House, a property David has inherited. Mrs. Edment is initially disheartened by the thought of moving, but her first look at the house changes everything. Captivated by its charm, she begins to see it as the dream home she could have wished for. She and her two children settle in happily, but things slowly begin to change as the house reveals its haunting side, and Mrs. Edment is the only one who seems to experience it.

โœจ Review :

The gothic setting, with a haunted house surrounded by trees, gave the story a distinct charm. Thereโ€™s something intriguing about a place that feels so peaceful and inviting at first, only to slowly reveal a darker side. The mystery surrounding the Barcaldine family and the ghosts in the house kept me curious about the secrets hidden within its walls. The characters were well written and the easy-to-follow writing made the story comfortable to settle into.

However, I did wish the paranormal elements had a little more room to unfold throughout the story. The first three-quarters felt relatively quiet in terms of suspense, but the tension picks up considerably in the last quarter. I would have loved a few more eerie occurrences along the way to make the most of the haunted-house setting.

Once the story picked up, I found myself eager to know what would happen next. I kept flipping the pages, feeling on edge because I had a feeling the author was planning to sacrifice a character I was rooting for. ๐Ÿ˜ญ The final stretch held my attention, and I felt the ending suited the story. Overall, it was an enjoyable read, and it has definitely made me want to explore more horror and paranormal fiction.

If you enjoy atmospheric haunted-house stories with a gothic touch, this one is definitely worth picking up! ๐Ÿ‘ป

Ward D by Freida McFadden - 3.5โญ๏ธ

๐Ÿ“š About the book :

Ward D follows Amy, a medical student who has to spend an overnight shift in a locked psychiatric ward as part of her hospital rotation. What should have been a regular shift soon turns into a tense and unsettling night, with Amy feeling increasingly trapped as things begin to take a disturbing turn when patients and staff start to vanish.

โœจ Review :

I went into this book expecting a lot more. Unpopular opinion, but honestly, I was a little underwhelmed.

The beginning was interesting and did a good job of building curiosity, but as the story progressed, I felt like it started dragging a lot. The plot didnโ€™t move forward as much as I expected, and at times, it felt like the story was relying more on maintaining a suspenseful atmosphere than actually giving us enough to keep things engaging.

Now that Iโ€™ve read a few of Freidaโ€™s books, I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™m wrong, Iโ€™m beginning to notice a certain pattern in her writing. Itโ€™s not that her books feel exactly the same, but there are similarities in the way she writes and builds her stories that are becoming more noticeable to me.

Honestly, the twists in this one didnโ€™t do much for me because I had already figured out 90% of things before they were revealed. I was also quite annoyed by the FMC, and what bothered me the most was how repetitive her internal monologue was. With the same thoughts being brought up again and again, which honestly got annoying after a while.

I know so many people loved this book but it wasnโ€™t one of her best for me. A good read, but not a great one. I expected more from this, especially considering how much I enjoyed some of her other books. However, I do think itโ€™s a good book and an easy read for beginners who are just getting into psychological thrillers.

๐Ÿ“– BOOK REVIEW : ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ“š Daylit Homicide by Harshul Saraswat

The story begins with a panwadi being murdered and a barber being arrested for the crime. His nephew, Bali, refuses to believe that his uncle is guilty and decides to find out what really happened. What follows is a straightforward investigation filled with clues, conversations and leads as Bali tries to piece everything together.

I really enjoyed following Bali as he carried out his own investigation, looking for clues, talking to people and following different leads to uncover the truth and help his uncle. The investigation was easy to follow and kept me interested throughout.

I had three suspects in mind while reading, and one of them did turn out to be the killer, so the reveal wasnโ€™t exactly a jaw-dropping surprise for me. But honestly, I didnโ€™t mind that. What worked really well was the pacing. The book never felt rushed, but it also never dragged or added unnecessary details just to stretch the story. At around 160 pages, it felt like the perfect length for the mystery it was trying to tell.

One of my favourite parts was the father son bond between Bali and Kalyan. It felt very natural, and I especially liked how Baliโ€™s dad eventually joins him in the investigation after finding out what heโ€™s been up to. Bali and Veerโ€™s friendship was another highlight, the kind of friendship where you know the other person will show up when things get difficult. The setting and characters felt realistic and easy to connect with, and the writing was simple and easy to follow.

Overall, Daylit Homicide was a really enjoyable read for me. A good, straightforward murder mystery with a well-paced investigation, believable characters and relationships that added a lot to the story. Definitely a book Iโ€™d recommend if youโ€™re looking for a quick mystery or something to get you out of a reading slump.

๐Ÿ“š BOOK REVIEW : ๐Ÿ‘‡

Animal Farm by George Orwell - 5โญ๏ธ

The story follows a group of farm animals who have had enough of being controlled and treated unfairly by their owner, Mr. Jones, and decide to rebel against him. After taking over the farm, they hope to build a new society where all animals are equal. But as time passes, the pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, gradually take control, and the farm begins to change in ways the animals never expected.

โœจ Review :

A beautifully written political satire. The idea of using animals to tell a story about something as complicated and messed up as power, politics, propaganda, and inequality is incredibly clever. The writing is simple and easy to read, but there is so much happening underneath the surface that you keep thinking after reading.

What struck me was how one small change led to another and then another, until the animals barely remembered what they had originally fought for.

I was annoyed a bit by Boxer, the horse, and Benjamin, the donkey, because one believed easily while the other stayed silent despite knowing better.

Boxerโ€™s tendency to blindly believe Napoleon and accept everything without questioning, a kind of mentality that can be dangerous because blind belief doesnโ€™t only affect the person who believes; it can influence everyone around them too. Yet, I was sad and heartbroken by his fate at the end. He did not deserve it. While Boxer believed too easily, Benjamin understood what was happening but chose not to speak up, which made it easier for the pigs to take control.

From โ€œALL ANIMALS ARE EQUALโ€ to โ€œALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS.โ€

That contradiction says so much about the story. The idea of equality is slowly twisted until inequality itself is presented as something acceptable.

For such a short book, Animal Farm gave me a lot to think about. It reminded me to question what weโ€™re told, look beyond what is presented to us, and not blindly trust people in power. Even though the book was written decades ago, its ideas still feel uncomfortably relevant to the world around us today.

๐Ÿ“– BOOK REVIEW : ๐Ÿ‘‡

Just Wanted to Tell You by @author_ruchiraushan takes us through Ruchi and Raushanโ€™s college years, where their lives gradually become connected through friendship and an unexpected relationship. I particularly enjoyed the college setting giving the story a warm, youthful feel, and the dynamics between the main characters and their respective friends adding a nice lively element to the story.

As the story progresses, Raushanโ€™s sudden disappearance brings a new direction to the narrative. Ruchiโ€™s journey also takes her to national television interviews, adding an interesting layer to what comes next.

Knowing that the story is inspired by true events adds another layer to everything that happens. Some moments are difficult to read, especially because the struggles Ruchi faces feel much more real knowing they are rooted in real experiences.

Another little detail I enjoyed was that each chapter begins with a quote that fit the overall theme of the story nicely and were something I looked forward to at the start of each chapter.

The writing is simple and easy to follow Overall, it was an interesting read with a mix of college life, relationships, and everything that comes after.

๐Ÿ“– BOOK REVIEW : ๐Ÿ‘‡

The Story Map by Sandeep Nair explores the idea that storytelling isnโ€™t simply a natural talent, but something that can be learned and improved with the right approach.

What stood out to me was how simply the author breaks down the process. The Soul, Body and Spirit framework looks at what you want to say, how you structure it, and how you adapt it to your audience and the situation. The book also introduces five key decisions and seven different storytelling missions, which make the process feel more structured and practical.

I also liked the use of diagrams, flowcharts and visual frameworks throughout the book. They make the ideas easier to understand, especially when dealing with concepts that could otherwise feel a little complicated.

Another thing I appreciated was the authorโ€™s approach to the book as a tool rather than something you have to read from beginning to end. You can focus on the sections that are useful to you and come back to them whenever you need them.

Overall, The Story Map is a practical and easy-to-follow guide for anyone looking to communicate their ideas more clearly and become more intentional with storytelling.

The Venom Of Time by Sandhya Nalawade - 4.5 โญ๏ธ

๐Ÿ“š ABOUT THE BOOK :

The story is set in the 26th century and follows Dr. Raya Ananthan, a geneticist searching for a solution to a global threat that modern science cannot explain. Her search takes her more than a thousand years into the past, to Princess Damayanti and the forgotten ancient kingdom of Anuradhapura

Rayaโ€™s path eventually crosses with Dheer when they realise that the pieces they have separately inherited from their grandfathers are connected to the past, to the lost kingdom of Anuradhapura and the vanished venom of serpents. They both set out to solve a mystery that has remained hidden for generations, connecting their time to a forgotten history.

โœจ REVIEW :

I finished this book in just two days, I actually thought this was a standalone when I started reading, so imagine my surprise when I found out thereโ€™s a book 2. ๐Ÿ˜ญ Now Iโ€™m impatient for the next one!

Iโ€™ve always been drawn to ancient mysteries, especially stories involving old scripts, serpents, maps, secrets, and piecing together clues from the past. The story and its setting were one of my favourite parts of the book. Since Iโ€™m from South India, I could really connect with the places and the ancient history, which made the whole experience more immersive for me. Honestly, I think this would make a really good South Indian movie.

The writing was simple and easy to follow. The characters were very well written, although I found Raya a little frustrating in the middle of the story. The focus stayed on the plot and the mystery throughout. The switch between the present and the ancient past was also seamless, making both timelines easy to follow. The only minor thing for me was the slightly longer chapters.

I even have a few theories about what might have happened, but I guess Iโ€™ll have to wait for the second book to find out how right or completely wrong I am. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Overall, I enjoyed the story, the setting and the mystery, and Iโ€™m definitely looking forward to book 2.
