Dignity can’t wait for displacement to end

In the Kyaka II refugee settlement a community based social enterprise @ubuchange was already working to improve livelihoods for their neighbors

In partnership with us they started asking their community where they saw beauty and what would create more it

They then developed a plan and held participatory design sessions (special thanks to architect and artists @the.work.of.leandra )

And now it’s coming to life …

In Kyaka II Refugee Settlement, our partner @UBUCHANGE asked their community a simple question: if you could design the world you wanted, what would it look like?
Similar answers came back again and again.

A place to gather.
Somewhere safe.
Somewhere to work together.
Somewhere that feels like home.

These are the answers that became the vision for the UBUCHANGE Creative Center - a shared space where women will produce handmade goods, youth will learn digital skills and paint, and the community will gather, connect, and create.

It’s not being built through a survey or needs assessment. But a real conversation, with the people closest to the problem, about what they actually want.

Before any wall goes up, the community designs it. Colors. Patterns. Details. The choices that turn a structure into a space that feels like home.

Earlier this summer, Salespreneurs at UBUCHANGE gathered for a participatory design session, making mind maps, drawing meaningful symbols, and discussing the colors that are meaningful to them.

Because this isn't just a space that functions - it’s one that reflects the people who will use it.

This week, we were delighted to welcome Ms. Leandra Graf from everyplace to UBUCHANGE.

She spent time with our Creative Women Salespreneurs, listening to their stories, discovering their handmade products, and learning how creativity, entrepreneurship, and market access are helping refugee women build sustainable livelihoods.

Moments like these remind us that meaningful partnerships go beyond visits. They build trust, inspire new ideas, and create opportunities for communities to thrive.

I am a photographer recognized for my work with the Rohingya
community, including the 2023 Nansen Refugee Award for the Asia and Pacific region. I am the founder of the Rohingya Photography School, and I live in the Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, with my parents, who were forcibly displaced in 1992.
I was born in the refugee camp and have worked to contribute to my community, including serving as a firefighter instructor and a water safety rescue instructor across different camps.
My photography has gained international recognition, with my work featured in publications such
as the Dhaka Tribune, Al Jazeera, Reuters, Southeast Asia Globe, Borderless360, the Stanley Center
for Peace and Security, Amnesty International, the Guardian, ABC News, the Washington Post, and
the Business Standard, among others.
My work has been exhibited across Europe and Asia, including in Japan, England, Sweden, and Slovenia. I have participated in exhibitions such as The Next Generation – Young Rohingya Refugees at the Oxford Human Rights Festival in 2021, Hostile Environment: the lives of Rohingya in Venice in 2022, and an online exhibition organized by Rohingya Action Northeast England in 2022.

from my own life and experiences, giving people a glimpse into the realities of displacement,
focusing on resilience, culture, and the strength it takes to keep going.
I use streaming as a way to connect with others, creating a space where different voices and perspectives can be heard and understood. My storytelling is honest and relatable, blending personal moments with larger conversations about identity, migration, and hope.
I am building a growing platform where stories matter, aiming to inspire, raise awareness, and bring
people together through shared human experiences.
