Pride Month is for stories that refuse to be erased.

Queer African literature doesn’t always shout—it lingers. It sits with you in silence, in longing, in survival, in joy that still finds a way through.

These are not just books. They are archives of feeling.

Nothing prepared me for the trauma I would encounter reading this book. I’m torn between recommending it so others can understand why I wept and got a headache, or not suggesting it to keep the rest of the world sane.

Would you intentionally read a book that might traumatize you?

At the heart of this powerful novel is Adekunle Aromire, also known as Peter Nwaigbo — a young law student who is abruptly thrown into the chaos of the Biafran war. But unlike many war stories driven by patriotism or politics, Adekunle’s reason for entering the battlefield is deeply personal: to find and bring back his brother. A childhood accident he holds himself responsible for left his brother paralyzed, and now the war offers him what he sees as a chance at redemption.

One of the most quietly haunting elements of the book is the thread of prophecy, brought to life through Igbala the Seer. On the day of Adekunle’s birth, Igbala visited his parents with a prophecy one they refused to listen to.

The author paints the war with such vivid detail and emotional honesty that while we as readers can only imagine the true horror of that time, we feel its weight deeply. The writing never glamorizes the conflict but shows us how war shapes — and sometimes misshapes — the hearts caught in its crossfire.

Though Adekunle doesn’t get everything he set out for, he isn’t left completely empty. The bittersweet ending is a reflection of life itself. What he loses is heartbreaking, but what remains is a quiet gift: a part of what he longed for, a reminder of all he endured.

I was thrown into a bit of a slump after These Letters End in Tears, and this book explores a similar theme—though I’d argue this is what These Letters aspired to be.

On another note, I think this might be the first time I’ve read a sex scene written from a man’s perspective by a male author. I was nervous about how it would be handled but I’d say the author did a good job.

This book made me question the need for single-sex schools especially boarding schools. What’s the long-term goal when these boys/girls will eventually enter the real world and have to engage with people of the opposite sex? What are we really preparing them for?

Blessings made me wonder why we rarely see the complexities of parenting in African homes explored beyond physical violence especially in families where love still exists. There are so many layers to African parents that remain untouched in literature.

The writing here was concise yet rich—straight to the point without sacrificing emotional depth or context. The conversations felt genuine and easy to follow. Honestly, chef’s kiss.

The title itself feels like a prompt, nudging the reader to reflect on what it means to be “other” in a world obsessed with the “norm.”

If I had to sum up the book in one sentence, it’d definitely be the highlight in slide 2.

This is a 4 star and you should definitely get a copy for your library.

Currently Reading: An Orchestra of Minorities by Chigozie Obioma 🎻✨

So far, so good! One thing I never expected was to be thinking about the many names of God in Igbo, yet here we are.

At its heart, this story follows Olisa, an orphan who falls for Ndali—the woman he once talked out of ending her life. But here’s the twist: the book opens with his chi (spirit guardian) pleading with the Almighty on his behalf for a sin committed unknowingly. Talk about drama!

Obioma’s writing? Chef’s kiss—it paints every scene so vividly, you feel like you’re right there. But whew, this book is long and not the kind you just fly through. You’ll need to set time aside for this one.

Would I recommend it? So far, YES! If you’ve read it, tell me what to expect in the comments. No spoilers, though! 👀📖1

MORE ON THE STORIES I LIKED:

The Future Looks Good – This story explores the consequences of a failed relationship between Bibi (Biafra) and Godwin, a fallout that ends up being meted out on the wrong person—Ezinma, her sister.

Buchi’s Girls – After the death of her husband, Buchi is forced to live with her sister, Precious, and Precious’s husband, along with her two little girls, Damaris and Louisa. When Buchi’s brother-in-law hits her over a chicken that Louisa loved, she is faced with the hardest decision a mother can make—sending her child away in hopes of a better life. And yet, the heartbreaking reality is that “better” is never guaranteed. Another day, we’ll dissect the audacity of men!

Wild – This story follows two cousins who could both be considered the black sheep of the family, though one is deemed worse for having a child out of wedlock. It reinforces an age-old truth: African parents will make all the noise about their children getting pregnant, but at the end of the day, they will still dutifully care for their grandchild—though not without despising their own child in the process.

Windfalls – A young girl is raised by a mother who sees her as nothing more than a pawn in their never-ending hustle for the next big payday. The performance has become so ingrained in the mother that when her daughter, a child herself, gets pregnant and later loses the baby, she shows no sympathy. Instead, she celebrates—they’ve just cashed out, and they’re good for the next couple of months.

I like to think that the unifying factor in these stories is the women at their core—different themes, different experiences, yet all weaving the same story of resilience.

I loved these stories because they were truly unpredictable. The wide gap between them made the book even more enjoyable—almost like opening an advent calendar.

My notes app is a hot mess of book feels, twists, and character drama! Gotta capture it all in there first so I can:
1. Give a polished review later.
2. Never forget the content of a book ever again.

Anyone else’s notes app look like this?
