PART 7 / HOW WILL THE WORK BE SELECTED?

This Is My Brighton is a curated civic project / not a conventional art competition.
There is no single winner, no preferred style and no attempt to decide what “good Brighton art” should look like.
We are looking instead at how each proposal can contribute to a richer, more diverse picture of the city.
Submissions will be considered through:
• Relevance to Brighton
• Connection to one or more of the four themes
• Clarity and authenticity of the response
• Community connection, reflection or positive social impact
• Contribution to the wider exhibition story
• Practical suitability for The Vault
• Balance across voices, experiences and creative practices
• Potential to become part of a lasting Brighton archive
Every submission will be reviewed by a five-person curatorial and selection panel, bringing perspectives from the creative industries, local organisations, psychology, anthropology and curatorial practice.
We’ll reveal the people behind the panel next.
But before introducing who is helping make these decisions, we wanted to be clear about what will guide them.
This first edition is the beginning of something we hope will return every year: a growing, community-led visual archive of Brighton, created by the people who experience the city in all its different ways.
So the artists selected in 2026 won’t simply be joining an exhibition.
They’ll be creating its first chapter.
📅 Applications close 22 August 2026
🎉 Opening: 4 September 2026 @the_vault_brighton

BRIGHTON, THIS ONE IS YOURS. 🌊
September marks The Vault’s anniversary month and the launch of This Is My Brighton, our only open call of 2026 and the first chapter of what we intend to become an annual Brighton project.
Each year, the exhibition will invite new voices to reflect the city as it changes: its places, people, overlooked stories and possible futures.
Over time, it will grow into a lasting visual archive of Brighton, created not by one institution or one official voice, but by the people who live, love, question and transform it.
This year, we deliberately focused our new seafront space on showcasing and promoting our member base through:
Roots & Routes curated by @s.walkr.luc, @fionaSzabo and @janesavageartistsbooks Stratified by @john_lymer
Still Making by @raybenjart & @giuseppe_iozzi
Kind & Talented a group show of ver 21 local artists members
The Republic of Dogs and Other Tomfoolery by @wednesdayschild.art
Urban DK by @relicartdesign including @drawingboards and @vjtwitchinart
Discarded / Divine by @beaubottletops aka Jessie Astill
With more event still to come, such as Mind Garden and Higher Grounds in August, Joy Is a Scar in November.
Now, for our anniversary, we are opening our hearts (and our arches) to the wider city with one big, open-hearted THANK YOU.
THIS IS MY BRIGHTON
Not simply another open call.
An invitation to co-author Brighton’s cultural story and help establish a new annual tradition.
What does Brighton mean to you?
